Here are my complaints.
1) It's journalistic malpractice that not once in more than 3,000 words does it mention that Semenya has XY chromosomes just like biological men. How that isn't mentioned is beyond me.
2) The article never mentions once in the article the Semenya is the two-time Olympic women's 800-m champion. It repeatedly refers to her as the 800-m champion, ignoring there are separate races for the two sexes.
3) The article falsely claims that WA bars Semenya from 800-m races. She is open to compete in men's 800-m races or women's 800-m races if she lowers her testosterone.
4) The article also false claims that Semenya underwent two "gender-verification tests" early in her career. There is no such thing a gender verification test. How could someone possibly test someone for their gender, which is a social construct?
5) While I will give Time credit for asking Semenya about the transgender issue in sports (I've never seen anyone do that), I thought they should have gone further. After Semenya said, "When it comes to situations like this, these are sensitive issues. You're not going to tell a woman that she is born a man. Having those internal testicles doesn’t make me a man," they should have asked her ok, "How do you define a woman? What is a woman? Your quote makes it sound like a you don't think a transwoman is a woman. Caitlyn Jenner was born as a man, won Olympic gold as a man and is now winning awards as a woman. Is she not a woman?"
6) I wish they'd ask one more question. "Caster, it's at least implied that you think some of the actions against you are racially motivated. Are you aware that the first DSD athlete banned by the IOC was Erik Schinegger - a white Austrian skiier who had been raised as a woman but was revealed to be genetically male prior to the 1968 Olympic Games where they were the women's favorite? Erik accepted the diagnosis and ended up transitioning to life as a man and has now fathered a baby. Does that change your mind about the racial aspect of this? Are you biologically related to your own children? If someone's sperm is used to produce a baby, can they still be a woman?"
