In honor of Nozomi Tanaka still being out there racing with an 800+1500 double over the last two days, I compiled all the races she competed in this year so far (source: mainly her WA profile + a few additions from ATHTRACK_AC @twitter).
All in all, Tanaka has raced 38 times this year, which means she raced roughly 0.9 times per week (or once per week since she opened her season in February). Still, she managed to run very well, with a 14:29.18 5000m NR probably being the highlight of the season.
Tanaka surely has to be the most active professional distance runner male or female right now or am I missing someone? How does she compare historically? I know that some runners stood at the starting line very often in the 1960s to 80s, are there cases of significantly more starts? Just out of interest because such racing strategies seem very unusual nowadays at this level, and yet she has developed into one the best non-African women over 5000 meters this year.
