Let’s admit this thread is a cynical piece of click-bait, another empty exercise in monetized LRC noise. We’ve already had major events (the Olympic Trials in Eugene) affected by climate impacts. In 2022, three heat waves hit France during the Summer and resulted in the deaths of an estimated 7,000 people. And where will the Olympics be held next year?...Likewise, during the Pacific NW heatdome event of 2021 (when the Trials were impacted) over 60 people died. It’s only a matter of time before a marquee event like the Olympics is impacted, that’s obvious, and that should be the point if this thread: global warming’s obvious threat to the sport. But if you were raised in the Nation’s petrochemical capitol (Houston) and if probable oil industry money runs in your family and financed your Ivy League days, well then, you may be a little rationally and ethically compromised. And hey—Science Is Now Religion—yes you are right that increased CO2 stimulates the growth of plants. They do grow larger and more robust. Unfortunately, a plant’s ability to uptake more minerals & nutrients through its roots does NOT increase as its growth accelerates under increased CO2. And that results in larger but LESS nutritious crops. When you consider that most of humanity depends upon 4 staple foods: rice, corn, wheat, and potatoes, that is not a promising development.
