I wanted to run a marathon barefoot but I kept getting injured during training. Mainly I just kept getting blisters on the bottoms of my feet. I'd try to ramp up my mileage slowly but I'd still kept getting blisters.
How fast do you run? I've run a few barefoot marathons and didn't have blistering problems. I only ran them in the 3:20s, though.
There is a tracked world record for sandals, but it isn't taken too seriously. This record is very open and a super sandal could probably be created. There isn't much interest because almost everyone runs slower in sandals than closed shoes.
No attempts that I know of have been made at Bikila's barefoot world record, in part because until very recently shoe companies would sponsor anyone who could run that fast. There is more to it though. In the west there is a pavement everywhere, with very little access to dirt roads and grass fields. No one but a westerner would have the luxury to go after that time and no one in the west grows up running barefoot. Its near impossible for anyone who didn't grow up running barefoot to train to run a marathon barefoot.
This leaves just the non-super shoe marathon world record. Its already in the 202s, I think. There isn't going to be any interest in running close to but above the world record, barring doing it in sandals or barefoot.
Hey, great reply. I guess with no shoes to sell no shoe company is going to support it and your point about growing up barefoot running is a good one.
