Jock Semple wasn't a good guy and using a quote from him definitely goes against their "inclusive" marketing/branding. Dumb decision on Tracksmith for doing that. It also seems like theres a bit of angst in the comments from people who got the BQ time but didn't get in. Maybe run faster next time?
Every race needs a race director like Semple, he is a hero, patriarch, and pioneer. Get the idiots in tutus, wigs, flippers, pajamas, etc off of the course.
I’m pretty liberal AF but goddamn I hate how much cancel/purity culture has taken over so many people’s way of thinking, e.g., not being able to quote some guy because he did something incredibly stupid one time in his life.
What the whiners should actually focus on is the uplifting resolution to the story … a few years after the incident the two of them became close friends (according to her).
I’m cracking up reading the comments
Who knew the Tracksmith PR department were LRC trolls!
Someone just said "How will the mass of runners that don’t fit this “mold” be honored/recognized?"
Uh, they won't? Ha, these comments are out of hand. And I say this as someone pretty slow. Waiting till my 60s to see if I can make it.
No creature is more insecure than the hobby jogger. I love watching this trainwreck.
Someone can correct me if I am wrong, but Semple is beloved among Boston legends (Amby Burfoot, Bill Rodgers, etc.). He was just a guy following the rules and trying to protect his race.
I learned a lot about him out of this. He also tried to pull a guy who was wearing bib #343555 from the front of the pack cause he thought he was a normie who belonged in the back, not recognizing #12 from the year before who just signed up late cause of injury. He was fine with women not wearing a bib run. A real rules and order guy, fwiw. Once they allowed women to register, he was very supportive.
