Ethiopian clocks 2hr 11 min 53 seconds in Germany Assefa’s Adidas trainers ‘enhanced by unique technology’
It was also a victory that will reignite the supershoe wars. For on Assefa’s feet were the new Adizero Adios Pro Evo 1s, which Adidas claims are “enhanced with unique technology that challenges the boundaries of racing”. Whatever the veracity of those claims, the shoes – which go on sale for a princely sum of £400 on Tuesday – will surely now have plenty of takers, even at their eye-watering price.

$500-ish actually isn't that much money compared to all the money marathon runners spend on a coach, a gym membership, multiple regular training shoes during the year, a doctor, a physical therapist, a massage therapist, airfare to get to the race, a hotel to stay at during the race, etc.
It will be interesting to see over the next year if other top runners can smash their PBs by large margins in these shoes, or if the shoes have very little effect on other runners' marathon times and it was something else that caused today's world record besides the shoes.
If all it took was £400 on her feet there would be a whole troop of runners breaking these records. £400 is easily affordable. No - it's what she has spent on something else that has done it.
