I agree with the article. It is often, if not always, designed to crown one invited runner. World records may be set, but it's not really much of a race.
In terms of money they're right. I said this last year, and I believe Rojo came at me saying I was wrong, but Kiera didn't get any guaranteed money to show up to Berlin last year. The Big 3 American races have a ton of money, more than the other majors. The other majors will just throw a ton of money at one or two individuals, and then the other people show up for a fast time and more convenient travel.

London marathon Is better than the american marathons. This year London had a way deeper startlist than any other American or European marathon. I think London M is as Rich as Boston and NYC M

I wish they would make appearance money public. I would love to know how much a top marathoner comes away with between Prize, appearance, race bonus and shoe/club sponsor money.
I know one pro (who is not top level) who gets sponsor money based on place and time as well as money from the race.

As big? I was under the impression that the London Marathon was by far the biggest.

London is clearly the no. 1 marathon in the world. Berlin has become a permanent time trial course with a phalanx of pacers leading 1 runner to a world record attempt. So, Berlin seems more prestigious in that they always have the fastest running in the world (Kipchoge, Geb, etc.) but in all fairness, Chicago, Boston and New York are much more competitive races.

I agree with what you're saying, but there is nothing stopping a fast runner from trying to stay with the pacers and snatch the win out from under Kipchoge. Andamnak Belihu tried that last year at Berlin and eventually drifted out to 2:06 or something. They wouldn't get appearance fee for sure, but they could still get a fast time here that would probably lead to better appearance fees at the other marathons.

Not being rude about D'Amato, but why should they give her a guaranteed appearance fee? She's a 2:19 runner with little profile outside of the US, there's dozens of Kenyans and Ethiopians who are better. She probably gets big fees from the US WMMs.

This post is very good, and was proven correct on the weekend with MASSIVE winning gaps for the winners of the coronation, I mean "race."
The U.S. majors almost always have more intriguing RACES.
