If people could read or think, lawyers would be useless.
INCORRECT!
What IS true is that there is a strong tendency among the ignorant to either disparage the value of those who work in the area in which the ignorant know nothing or to envision conspiracy theories among those who actually know something.

Judges are lawyers by their JD when not appointed as a Judge. Since the general populace doesn't have a JD, a Judge respects agents of the law, including attorneys. The reality is that you can have a brilliant individual, but in order for his claim to be listened to, as a plaintiff or a defendant, he or she or they need counsel. Without it, one objection can derail your case and no judge is going to help a pro se client defeat an attorney.
if lawyers could write in normal English and not their goofyass legal yoda speak, they would be useless. but we need them to translate their own e pluribus nonsense.
A lot of lawyers can't read or think either. Judges too. Bad habit of twisting plainly written laws into courtroom jargon. Sometimes you need an appeals court judge to actually look at the law and say "oh so that's what it says, ooops."
Why is this? Because the job of a lawyer is to win for their client, or in the case of a DA, to lock up anyone they can. It's not their job to read laws accurately, if they can get away with twisting them around. And these are who gets made into judges.

I think you are painting with a pretty broad brush here. Most lawyers act ethically. Most see themselves as officers of the court first and while they advocate for their clients they do so within the bounds of accepted legal practice. Sadly the outliers are often high profile and taint the rest.
Lawyers are a screen to prevent normal people from being able to fight just causes. Government regulators and enforcement agencies won't deal with terrible government and corporate violations unless a lawyer is fronting the public reaction. So citizens fighting just causes for which there isn't money for lawyers get nothing but closed doors and shrugged shoulders, or worse, the petty tyrant treatment from some power-abusing government drone.
I look at the requirements to make a report to the SEC for instance. It has to be presented by a legal firm and still, only 5% of complaints get an investigation.
Power to the people is so separated from the reality of how our system works that people don't even know they have any, and it requires near-inhuman levels of commitment and persistence to use it constructively. Voting is practically the opposite of civic participation now but we believe we have a free society because we vote! This is how we are kept out of the "great big Fn'g club and you aren't in it". Lawyers are a key part of the construction and maintenance of the club They act as gatekeepers.

More like if all people were honest and forthright, lawyers would be useless.
The problem with lawyers is that they make money off conflicts between people. When there aren’t enough conflicts between people to make all the lawyers rich, some of the lawyers become politicians who in turn create the necessary conflict to make the all lawyers rich.
Everyone knows they have loads of experience looking into certain issues and how they are ordinarily handled in court. even if you think your IQ is 200 and you want to spend hours researching something , you can’t just go in like a madman and argue with the judge as to why you’re right and the other side is wrong. Your chances are much better with an attorney
