This race was epic, it had everything other than the WR, but only just. Nguse pushing Jakob to 3:43, George Mills becoming fastest British miler behind Cram and Coe, Laros breaking Jakob's 18 year age record, and paced by the next superstar Cam Myers.
What is truly insane Is Reynold Cheruyot 3'48''06. This Is the WR U20. You guys keep celebrating Laros but this guy is only 8 months older and he is getting all the fastest time ever at his age. He comes ahead of Laros in EVERY RACE!

Again all these things are great and deserve attention. I don’t think Cheruiyot ran his best race either.

Why does it have to be either Laros or Cheruiyot? They’re both great. Nick, I don’t think you need to comment on every thread mentioning Laros and putting down his accomplishments, just to talk about Cheruiyot.

yeh, he's a year older. I should hope he's ahead at this point, especially since he's Kenyan and thus peaks at 19-22.

You know why that is. While Holland register birthdays Kenya is a little more lose on that front….

I don't think he is trying to put down Laros. I think he is pointing out that there is another runner who is still U20 who is running great and is ignored. They have both been running great this year and both deserve attention.

running that fast this young is way more uncommon for an european than for a Kenyan so it's normal that Laros gets a lot more attention.

I get that and it's not surprising, but Reynold Cheruiyot just ran the U20 record, so he should be mentioned. Also, there have been a lot more fast young non-Africans of late. It looks like Ingebrigtsen may have opened the flood gates. It really is great to see more and more parity in the middle distances. Imagine how much untapped talent there must be in Asia and South America.

Well…. The old U20 world record was 3:49.29 from 2009. So I would say that going that fast at a young age is uncommon for both Africans and Kenyans.
The Cheruiyot/Laros thing reminds me of the Barega/Jakob situation when they were both U20 (both are born in 2000 - Barega 9 months older)
They obviously both became Olympic champions.
However, Barega’s fastest 5000m was run in 2018. Jakob on the other hand is still improving.

This makes no sense. If it’s a record, that means no one has ever run this fast
It’s uncommon for BOTH African and European runners to run this fast at that age.

come on, you get what I mean. There are/have been plenty of elite 18-20yo East africans. Very few europeans. And it's also quite common that those impressives youngsters from East Africa don't improve much after 20 while every single non east African that is so good this young makes it to the top for the following 10 years. It's not about 1 sec or one year difference. It's a tendency.
Let’s see it play out before lumping in Reynold with all those guys. He won the 1500 in dominant fashion at World Juniors, showed the toughness to nearly win U20 XC, he’s progressed a huge amount in his first senior season, and he’s shown he is a ferocious competitor who always finishes hard. Even in saying all that he looks more like a Ngeny or Kipchoge than maybe a Kwemoi or whoever you want to unfavorably compare him to. Laros also is special. More than just how fast they run both guys push themselves and are fearless. You saw Cheruiyot make a big move at the bell today much like Laros did in the Worlds final.

Reynold is larping as a teenager. Neils IS a teenager.
