I hope I'm wrong (really!), but my guess is he has "only" planned for trying to win tomorrow. When asked about his (remaining) WR plans about a week ago, he said that he wants to start with the mile and the 1500m, and that he might go for the 3000m next year.
Just winning a DL final is going to be worth a fair chunk of money, much less breaking the MR of 7:35.44. Why wouldn't he race it? He just ran a 3:43 mile, so he's doubling down on his fitness and going for a 2x win. The only scenario where racing the 3k is a bad idea is if he gets injured tomorrow but that isn't a likely scenario.
Jacob maybe isn't in the mood, nor shape to set up another Kerr, Nuguse.
Nuguse BTW doesn't respect the rare free ride he had, to go some 2 seconds faster than he would have otherwise. I;m seeing him ride in the back and do a 150 last 800, 56 plus 54.
Jacob actually was happy that other guys coming up can compete at the front, where they can drag each other to greater heights.
So Nuguse needs to do some of the work next time.
Jacob and Nuguse will be having a beer tomorrow eve, where he'll be told.
If one of the Ethiopians is well fit tomorrow we will attend the second defeat of Jakob this season. If they still lose to Jakob they earn the name of dork athletes of the season.
The rabbits are going out at 7:30 pace lol. Jakob might be in 7:19 shape but it's not happening tomorrow
If they actually do, it’s a joke. Multiple 12:40 guys…race should be going out at 3:58 slowest. Let the Ethiopians go hard.
Truly. The pacing goals should be Prakel to 1500 in ~3:42.5, McSweyn maintaining the pace to 1800 or 2k in 4:56 if he’s feeling good (he raced a 4:48.77 9 days ago but the circumstances are understandably different). If you’re Aregawi in particular, I don’t see why you wouldn’t want 4:56 at 2k to give yourself a snowball’s chance of running 7:21-7:22 and beating a fatigued Jakob, or at least going very high on the all-time list.
Kejelcha in particular I think was in 7:21-7:22 shape earlier this season, when he closed that 12:41 with a 4:54.2 2k.
Even if the leaders do hit 2k in “only” 5:00.0, it wouldn’t surprise me if the winning time wound up being 7:24, maybe even 7:23 and change.
If 2k pace is 4:55, this seems to be a conservative split if Jakob is in the shape when he ran his 2 mile record, leaving him with energy. If he runs the next 200 in 29, and then decides to run a 1:55 last 800 like he did for the 2 mile then that's 7:19 for the 3k. If Jakob doesn't have the strength for a 1:55 and lags in 1:57 for the last 800 he will probably tie the record or just miss it. I am still thinking 7:18 high and 7:19 low are possible. The wind in Eugene is currently 5 mph and temps are in in the mid 70s. Seems almost ideal for running a Pb. Temperature is better than yesterday.
