You know I believe you are right. This race should have been run later in the day. The world record might have been gone, but they are both young and will get another shot.
I'm starting to think some of the crazy predictions some of us had for Jakob when he was 17 or 18 might yet come true regarding WRs. If they restore the 1500m to Monaco he could perhaps run 3:24 or even 3:23 in the next couple of years. We should start a Change.org petition.
Why are the athletes running at the hottest time of the day?
Well they are for European television purposes.
But, that being said, I don't think you are wrong. No 83 degrees isn't crazy hot - but it's not as good as 70 which is what it's going to be at 8.30pm tonight and no sun exposure. It's not just the race it's the warming up too etc. I said before the race if this had been last week in Brussels he would have broken the record and I would go one more now and say if this race was 7 hours later today I think he would have done it too.
Still a sensational run no matter way you look at it (from all of them actually) - 11 under 3.50

No - we aren't seeing anything under 3.25 from Jakob - it will still be very tough for him to break 3.26. It's been analyzed to death here recently but this record is well within his wheelhouse and no matter what any scoring tables say, is not as hard as the 1500m. El G was 3.28.2 for the record, Jakob today 3.28 high with a comparable close. It's not inconceivable to imagine 3.28.0 from him en route and the strength to finish it off.
Oh well, guess he'll just have to cling to his outdoor WRs in distances nobody cares about. 🥱
Honest question, do you have a mental breakdown right now? You are posting this everywhere. Being extremely close to take down a legendary WR is not the burn you think it is. He can cling to his third fastest mile of all time.

I think having Nuguse on his heels at least took away part of it. You could almost see him registering that he was close, and thus not wanting to risk fading out.

Let's be civil. He ran great today and deserves some credit for that. Being the third fastest ever at the mile is no small feat. He still has time to improve on that as well.
I actually disagree here. In races mile and below this kind of heat doesn’t really impact performance and maybe even helps a little bit as long as it’s not unreasonably hot. I remember when I ran my 1500m PB it was 80 degrees and full sun so likely 90+ on the track. Easier to warm up, get your heart rate up before the start, etc. On the flip side I have struggled to run as fast in 1500m races held at night when temps are in the 60s despite being in better shape.

For those who spend more on this forum than me: Are people like this trolling, and trolling only?
Or do they really think there is some kind of "gotcha" to pointing out that the guy winning every race but one (where he silvered while being sick) still has a few strides/better pacers up to the toughest WRs in running - which he might very well get next year?
