Sure, he was injured. However, he was NOT doing "little training." This dude was doing some monster stuff before he was hurt, then he was doing monster cross training.
I mentioned this after the US champs and people became butthurt- fisher brings it at the competing stage against other top competitions. Woody does not, he just sits and kicks to win US championships.
Seriously wonder how grant would have done in Budapest considering how no Ahmed performed (consistent as always).
Mostly stationary bike . . . but including some aqua running & Alter-G . . . 2-3 hours/day for 3 weeks in Park City . . .
Then leg felt ok so flew to St. Moritz w/BTC team for another 10-12 days of land training . . .
Then went to Budapest on the off-chance he might be called to sub in for Woody, Sean or Joe . . .
Stated this race was a best-cast scenario . . . extremely upbeat w/results . . .
Proved to himself he can maintain fitness while x-training . . . admitted the reason he got injured was likely due to bumping his mileage this season up to 100-110 miles/week . . . said in future he will go back to his prior (90-100) weekly mileage then add in biking & Alter-G . . .
Admitted he only planned to run a couple of 3ks to wrap up the season . . . but now this Weltklasse 5k result changes everything . . .
Appears Grant will get into the Eugene DL 5k final so appears his season is not over.
Observation: there is a non-DL men's 10k race in Brussels next week . . . JG didn't ask Grant about that & it was never mentioned . . . this Ivo Van Damme Memorial meet used to hold what was usually the fastest 10k in the world . . . great weather, temps usually around 60 F . . . let's see what transpires . . .

He’s not currently verified to be in the DL final, but he is certainly a possibility to be a representative- ie the host nation gets one bye into an event in the final, from what I understand. Fact check that please if not correct.

Per the Grant/JG interview, the DL Final host nation (US this year) gets a bye in every event being held . . . Grant likely will get in on his current DL ranking . . . but likely would be selected if not . . .
Which also opens the door for BTC runners Frerichs, Schweizer & Teare to compete as well . . .
"not bad" he says...12:54 is beyond an exceptionally insane effort despite if healthy and especially freakish awesome be not 100%...FAR beyond "not bad". 13:35 would have been a "not bad" effort for Fisher.

He'll finish 12th for 10 spots. Due injury, travel dislike, runners choosing other events he most likely makes top 10, even without a 'host country' slot.

Have read and heard comments over the past few years . . . including today from someone who should know better . . . that Grant should move up to the marathon.
That never made sense.
Now, it's utter nonsense.
After Grant's statements today regarding his training going forward . . . not now . . . not in the near future . . . and likely, not ever.
People always underestimate cross training. If you get injured while in good shape, and cross train like crazy, you can maintain or even improve running fitness.
It's just another piece that demonstrates how underrated cross training is.
Sure, you lose neuromuscular conditioning, which decreases running economy, but you can maintain aerobic conditioning - if not, improve it.
if you're willing to, you can train much harder on the bike than you can through running.
Think there is some revisionist history here. Grant ran 12:46 last year. He was likely training too hard (hence the injury) and the cross training allowed him some time to recover while maintaining some fitness. It’s not like he got in 12:54 shape because of the cross training. He was in similar shape prior to the injury but was overcooked.
