I’m 43 so I know my speed and strength capacity is going to keep declining, but I just started back running after over a 20 year hiatus this past December so I don’t have a lot of wear and tear on my legs.
For frame of reference in the late 90s I was capable of going sub 15 minutes in a 5K. I recently broke 20 minutes in a 5K. I have no major injuries and have worked my way up to about 35-40 mpw and have lost over 30lbs. I’m still about 15 lbs heavier than I was at my peak. I do One speed workout a week, and one long run a week. The rest easy. I also do strength and core work during the week (weights, and planks).
I don’t plan on doing any sort of crazy training routine, but was curious if it was reasonable for me to think I could maybe work my way into the 17s for a 5K in a couple years.
Anyone else go through something similar? Is this reasonable, or am I going to make myself go crazy trying to get faster?
Thanks in advance.
