Hi everyone, I posted here 2 months ago about how long to get to a sub 17 5k from a just under 20:00 5k (19:57) having just started real running training, never ran in high school or college for track or XC (only running was from soccer). 22 year old Nigerian male in Canada for context.
Was told to start running and build up to 65-70 km per week (45 miles a week) and go from there. Unfortunately due to travelling/hiking and working this summer I only averaged 30 km a week over the past 8 weeks (20 miles a week), but plan is to get to 80 km (50 miles) a week by the end of October so right now I’m slowly building up milage (went from 20 (on vacation!) to 32 to 37 to 50 km this week where I want to plateau a couple of weeks to not get injured.
While doing this I said “let me test out that 5k again, I feel like I need to really push myself hard.” So I ran very slowly this past week and a half to rest my legs for a solo 5k time trial. Earlier today I ran that time trial on the track as hard as I could and hit 17:35 (3:31 per km, 5:39 per mile). I’m really surprised I had that in me.
Now granted this is slow by this site’s standards, but now I’m a bit more excited than before (since I didn’t really run a lot) and think I can hit sub 16 within the next year and a half with slightly more serious training. I’m wondering if this goal is realistic if I can get the milage up to 80 km and continue running in the winter with 1 speedwork session, 1 long run, and 1 tempo run a week, along with strides after all my easy runs.
Long term the goal is to run marathons because I prefer long distance running but wanted to use the 5k first to assess fitness so I know what my tempo pace and long run paces should be. Thanks in advance.
