Why does the US always do well in shot put but suck in hammer, discus and javelin?
You think US campus and/or local police would allow a bunch of guys carrying spear type objects heading for a public arena? ;-)
Serious answer: It's a good question - if the US sucked at shot put too I'd say that American Football present a far, far, far better economic option to strong young men since that's no factor at all in Europe.
Does shot put have any significant status in high school, college or university athletics? Do they recruit shot putters to let them do double or triple events?
Daniel Stahl is a several times Swedish champion in the shot put too. How good is/was Crouser in the discus?

Crouser is the HS record holder in the discus and has 4 of the top 10 best throws.
He mentioned last year he would like to do the discus again. That would be cool now that he is the unequivocal shot GOAT.

Friggin Canada won the hammer gold!
For the Javelin at least, all our talented kids are pitching baseballs. The economic potential of being a major league pitcher far outweighs being a top javelin thrower. Even toiling it out in the minors, the money made is much better. Can you imagine some of these 6'5" - 6'8" guys that currently pitch being javelin throwers? Also, quarterbacks would be great throwers too. I know it is just one example, but Terry Bradshaw was a HS state record holder in the javelin prior to dedicating himself to full-time QB.
I'm sure many of our NFL defensive lineman would be great discus and hammer throwers.

Baseball - of course! There's almost certainly a whole bunch of 80-90-95 meters javelin men there.
