It looked like Tsegay knew she could use the arm swing to her advantage and crowded Hassan. It’s still on Hassan for drifting to block, but the Ethiopian embraced the contact and let Hassan take herself out.
Chelimo's Tokyo Drift (I know it didn't happen IN Tokyo) was the first thing I thought of too. What would have happened if those guys hadn't budged but Chelimo tried to move out anyway? Someone would have gone down, that's what.

Probably the best explanation I've seen so far, but the night is young....
Drifting relies entirely on the person behind being responsible/safety conscious enough to slow or move to avoid contact. Tsegay was running for the line, Hassan was running for Tsegay's running line. By drifting she is almost daring the person to run into her so she can hardly be surprised that once in a while someone will simply refuse to yield. Tremendous to see this tactic backfire so spectacularly.

That's why they didn't go out hard; they wanted Hassan to be right there on the final straight. Like the old 'rope a dope' Tsegay applied the 'contact absorption takedown' ftw. Much easier than running a full 10k.

Tsegay didn't embrace the contact. She saw Hassan drifting out and first time Tsegay tired to swing out. Some contact was made Hassan drafted back towards lane 1 a little and Tsegay tired pass again and Hassan drifted back out but this time Tsegay face showed she was pissed and she was determined to run in a straight line from that point out.
I like both athletes but I picked Tsegay for the win.
Coe needs to grow a pair and come down hard on this crap. Same with the final sprints in bike racing, nothing will be done until someone is paralyzed or killed.

Now where is Tsegay her legible response, on what happened there? Tsegay is always aggressive in a races (as she would kill) On this level, you have to be somehow agressive. Gidey does stuff like that, Tsegay, Chelimo, Hassan, etc. Not nice, true. Angels wouldn't do track ;)
