Monson gets a big profile in Outside and Ritz is honest about her chances:
“If you look at it on paper right now, she should be fifth or sixth in either event,” Ritzenhein says, referring to Monson’s double attempt at the World Championships. “If you look at the times, the competition she’s run against, it’s hopeful. I think she can medal in the right kind of situation, but that’s not going to be the barometer for success for her right now.”
In the opulent alpine resort town of St. Moritz, Switzerland, America’s fastest distance runner is preparing to measure up against the world’s best. How close can she get?
There was one major thing I didn't like about the article and I get that the article is written for a non track audience but her lack of kick is something that should have been talked. Did they mention anywhere that she didn't win a US title this year?
Ritz is smoking crack cocaine. Monson finishes 10th at best.
It would be more accurate to say she’s 7th or 8th on paper. I would wager she’ll finish top 8 in at least one event. 5th-6th is the best case end of realistic.
Sorry, she has zero kick and not good enough to run away from the field.
I predict that Cranny will finish ahead of her at Budapest. Both of them have very slim chances of medaling but the 10k is definitely the weaker of the two.
"The morning after Monson’s easy three-miler, she upgraded to 10 miles, running half of the workout alongside OAC teammate Sage Hurta-Klecker, who is one a dozen On-sponsored athletes here in St. Moritz to train."
"It’s a necessary normal while Monson strives to maximize her budding talent and represent a country that has yet to produce a world champion in the 10,000 meters, male or female. (Only two in history have: Kara Goucher earned a silver medal in 2007 in Osaka; and Emily Infeld won bronze at the 2015 World Championships in Beijing)."

Billy Mills?
Wouldn’t he be an Olympic champion, not a World champion?
Nice profile. I wonder what Obiri thinks of Monson’s prospects to ever win a global medal on the track, and if she is ever around to offer any concrete advice on how Alicia might continue to level up. She might have some useful insights to supplement what Ritz brings. The coffee club guys hint that when Obiri is there for a joint work out, the other women are crushed, still.
in that era the Olympic champion was considered to be the World champion, but during the 1970's the late Ad Paulen (IAAF-president) decided it would be good for the IAAF to have it's own money making event. That's also why it was on a 4-year cycle too, just like the Olympics, when it started in 1983. After 1991 Worlds became bi-annual.

Cranny should be stoked after reading this.
If Ritz thinks Alicia can finish 6th or better, then what would be a best guestimate for Elise? 5th or better?
Looks like the women's 10k will have Hassan, Gidey & three other countrywomen who are all under 30, and Nawowuna/Kenya who is also under 30 but finished only 6th at Kenya's champs.
Elise and/or Alicia would need to beat at least one of those women just to get 6th.
Here is the women's 10k entry list w/pbs:

On this entry list, Alicia has the 9th fastest pb, Elise the 10th . . . but the list includes 5 Ethiopians along with Eilish McColgan who may not be in top form following injury . . . so you might be accurate to pencil in Alicia and Elise for 7th and 8th pre-race. . .
Weather conditions haven't been discussed yet . . . race goes off approx 9pm local time on 8/19 . . . sunset will be just before 8pm so under the lights . . . little if any breeze but stadium is partially enclosed anyway . . . looks like high temps for the day will be around 90F but down to around 70F at race time . . . evening humidity around 50% recently . . . pretty good conditions for a fast one . . .

That is such a good assessment. Your thoughts on the 5?
That is such a good assessment. Your thoughts on the 5?
Much obliged for the kind words.
Thoughts on women's 5k at this point? . . . yes, but muddled . . . still too far off and we don't even know at this point who's running what . . . and who looked good and who didn't in the 10k . . . so, let's save that discussion for a future thread . . .

No doubt EPObiri has plenty of advice on injecting pace. Supplement, indeed.

I didn't know worlds happened twice a year!
In all seriousness, you mean biennial. Not to be a grammar shark.
