-Monticello Associates Elite Heats begin at 8 p.m. (women first, men at 8:15) - headlined by Matt Centrowitz and Johnny Gregorek (two-time defending champion) on the men's side and Dani Jones and Taryn Rawlings (last year's runner-up) on the women's side
-7 former Ohio HS athletes will be competing in the elite fields, while some of the top local HS runners and teams will compete in the HS races (including Westlake's Sarah Peer)
-800 runners expected across all heats - sign up, come out to watch on the bridge, or check out Instagram Live (@guardianmile) for live streams of all races, including the elites! Citius Mag will also have some coverage on site.
Will be interesting to see if Centro continues to return to form coming off knee surgery. He's never been quite as good on the roads and Gregorek has owned this race the last two years. Looks top be set up nicely for Dani Jones to me on the women's side.

Who cares. I'll ignore this race the same way I haven't watched the baseball team since they went woke and changed the name

This is woke, that is woke, everything that I don’t like and that makes me melt like a snowflake is woke.
Meanwhile, the guy that owns the Guardians and changed the name from the Indians, is one of the few remaining Republicans with a level head and that doesn’t cave to the whims of Trump and refuses to put his head in the ass of the Orange man.
Getting back to the actual course / race - I remember there being a lot of discussion in particular two years ago about how downhill (and potentially short) this course was / is. Anyone run the community races before and have some input?

sure that's when you quit watching. just like you stopped watching the NFL when Kap took a knee
I hear they're looking to add a "Patriot Division" at Guardian just for people like you. Rudy Giuliani will be the official starter, and all participants will get a free ticket to a 1993 Cleveland Indians game.
It will be interesting to see what Dani Jones' fitness is like. Don't feel like we got an accurate sense of that at USAs with her shoe coming off in the final and she's had some solid race efforts (and workouts for that matter, per IG) since. I've never heard of this Ethiopian woman but she's run some fast times.

The course certainly seems fast based on past results. A tail wind or head wind can change that pretty easily but I've never been on the bridge. I am racing in the open heat so I'll report back any relevant thoughts.
On July 11th the race host GOH Run posted the following which seems like it reduces or eliminates any idea of the course being short:
We are proud to announce that the Guardian Mile course has been re-certified for 2023 by World Athletics! With the updated certification, Guardian Mile V has been formally sanctioned by USATF and added to the World Athletics calendar for 2023 as a Category F road race. Due to the separation of the start and finish line (100%) and elevation change (-3.11 m/km), the course is ineligible for world record status as a road mile or time entry into the 2023 World Athletics Championships in Budapest. However, this addition to the WA Calendar means that athletes competing in the Monticello Associates Elite Heats can earn points towards their world ranking for the first time
This other kinda random article from last year states a net elevation gain of +3m but I don't know what the grade up or grade down are like. The recertification of the course in 2023 means the start and finish could have changed slightly from last year as well, so the elevation gain / loss could be different Hope Memorial Bridge, Cleveland, OH, USA; Saturday, July 23 (night race) Distance: 1 mi., point-to-point, certified (OH18502JHP) course over Hope Memorial Bridge; start elevation 201m, high point 233m, finish elevation 204m (3m elevation GAIN). Not record eligible due to 100% start/finish separation.
going a little deeper, the USATF course certification OH18502JHP does indeed cite a net 3 meter gain. Of course the startline and finishline set up are what's important after the measurements are made.

Yawn. Centro has struggled to break 3:37 this year. Injured or not, champion or not, I won't be tuning in to watch this.
Even if this year’s certification added 3 meters, 3:46.67 for Gregorek last year is insane considering the elevation gain and then loss of the course. Unclear if there was a tailwind, which could help a lot, but that’s flying.
Also, if it was unclear to anyone else, it looks like the races will be watchable as it seems they will be live streamed through Instagram.
I ran the open race a year ago. Fyiw my Garmin had the course as legitimate. The race seemed really fast because the first about 800 m is a slow, progressive uphill that doesn’t feel like it takes much out of you followed by a nice downhill to the point that your momentum is carrying you quite nicely in the final stretch. Great and fast race would run again.
