Criteria: Who I favor to win in the next race taking into account recent form, race dynamics and pedigree.
Tier 1 -Massive Favorite:
1. Jakob (Last Ranked: 1) - 3:27.14 puts him in a different class altogether even if his biggest challengers were missing
Tier 2 -Medal Contenders:
2. Mohamed Katir (LR: 2) - Runs at Monaco in a 5K next, but his win at European team champs was impressive to see him in a slower race (even if not 1:47 as mistakenly displayed on splits)
3. Timothy Cheruiyot (LR: 3) - Looked good in Kenya the last couple weeks, seemingly going through the motions of a 3:34 at Trials, hopefully he'll be in London DL
4. Yared Nuguse (LR: 4) - Bit of a scare at USAs, but answered questions about his close with a 12.6 last 100 after an impressive prelim that could be replicated in a Worlds Heat/Semi if necessary
5. Oliver Hoare (LR: 5) - Been in training, so just going off of his form this season and consistency
6. Mario Garcia Romo (LR: 6) - Same as Hoare
7. Abel Kipsang (LR: 12) - Large breakthrough for him looking confident with a big SB in 3:29.11 in Silesia. He comfortably qualified at Kenyan Trials but was surprisingly far back of the Cheruiyots. Yesterday's race makes me think he's been training through.
8. Josh Kerr (LR: 9) - Moves up a spot for his solid, if unspectacular run against Jakob in Stockholm as well as some maybe not great runs from Habz (Silesia) and Nordas (Heusden) after their breakthroughs in Oslo
Tier 3: Dark Horses
9. Lamecha Girma (LR: NR) - Showed major potential in Stockholm even in defeat, but seems unlikely he'll run it at the global level a ton
10. Reynold Cheruiyot (LR: 9) - Improved his PB to 3:30.30, even though he gave himself probably too much work to do with his positioning/tactics, looked really good at Kenyan Trials
11. Azzedine Habz (LR: 7) - Tumbles a bit after going out hard yesterday and falling apart a little bit as Kipsang/Cheruiyot rolled past. Might be better suited trusting his excellent kick and laying off hot paces.
12. Narve Nordas (LR: 8) - Thought he'd be sub-13 and close for a win. His performance was fine, but I expected a bit more.
13. Neil Gourley (LR: 11) - Tricky win at British Champs, though I wonder if we may be seeing his ceiling (~3:30) in these fast 1500 races
14. Andrew Coscoran (LR: NR) - Really impressed with his trajectory right now, running within himself and finishing strongly. Certainly should be aiming at making the Worlds Final and mixing it up.
15. Stewart McSweyn (LR: NR) - I think after yesterday's pace job it's fair to put him in this group despite a lack of a sub-3:31 clocking...he's close to back
Tier 4: Really Good, But It's Crowded Here
16. Sam Tanner - Nice PB and shouldn't have a problem in getting into Diamong Leagues now for the most part
17. Vincent Keter- Ran super boldly yesterday, which might've hurt his finish...in general needs to race more patiently and smarter if he wants to make Kenyan teams
18. George Mills- Kind of a shame that Elliot Giles is going to go to Worlds over him in my view, much higher ceiling for Mills to me
19. Isaac Nader- Been pretty impressed with him all year, and a nice PB yesterday
20. Elliot Giles- Can you do well in the rounds in the 1500 on 25mpw? Guess we'll see
