Rumors were flying around here for a while, with nobody able or willing to provide sources:
HOKA NAZ Elite and Alan Culpepper have parted ways effective July 10. Our athletes have clearly benefitted from his expertise, and we would like to thank Alan for his time, effort, and service during these last 14 months. Our search for a new head coach will begin immediately.
Step 1: Join a pro team as head coach Step 2: Secure your son a spot on the team and a shoe contract Step 3: Leave the team after a year Step 4: Profit
I see that Cruz removed the video announcing his commitment to NAZ Elite from his instagram account. I know it was there up until recently because I realized he wasn't racing at USAs and looked at his account to see if he was still running a week or two ago.
Didn't Gault mention that Culpepper wants to uproot the team to base in Boulder instead of Flagstaff so that Culpepper can be close to his family? A team that is called the Northern Arizona Elite?
If so, then shame on Culpepper to take on this role at this first place.

Wow, that's an impactful closing line for an article that doesn't provide much new info on the situation. SLB continues to be one of my favorite writers in the running space.

This is all starting to paint a picture re the family. I always thought Cruz’s bouncing between schools then to NAZ elite looked flaky. Now this. Culpeppers: outstanding runners but flakes who are only in it for themselves.
Maybe his wife decided it wouldn't work. Alan Culpepper's always been a guy who placed family over his career. He did this to get his son a spot on the team, and he presumably is staying in Boulder because he's got kids still in school, one of whom was the best runner on a very good program as a freshman last year.
Just to support that claim, those who remember his pro career may recall that during a down era in U.S. distance running, he would usually qualify for the U.S. team but do not prep racing in Europe prior to the championships (only doing Cowtown or some other Western road race), and so would be utterly unprepared for the world stage. This was on grounds of travelling in Europe being bad for the family. I happened to think that it would be great for the family actually to travel to Europe in the summers (and have tried to do that with my family whenever possible). So, there's a long history of him setting his family above his career and even the good of the U.S. team.

When someone tells you what they are BELIEVE THEM.
Alan jumped from UTEP to NAZ for a year each. Cruz has been several places. What is going on with them?
Nothing is going on with them. Alan just wanted to stay in Boulder. You're making a big deal out of nothing.
Someone left a coaching job after a year. Call the police, we have a crime here. OMG!
It's a pretty big deal for Alan to jump ship after a year twice and his son to basically do the same at his multiple schools. Cruz has to go pro because he can't transfer twice without sitting out a year.
