For 21 laps he was never better than 7th. Only in the last 4 laps was he 5th or better. As as casual observer, it appears he never put himself in a position to win. Why? Was he afraid, no guts, no balls, or a coward?
Without a plan, plan to fail.

He was too busy wondering why you didn't qualify.
1. Fisher was already pushing it pretty hard at the end no reason to take the lead here
2. Like the observers pointed out, every dude in the field thinks they have the best kick. Everyone in the top 4 going into the last lap thought they could win in the current situation
I was thinking the same thing. I’m surprised he didn’t ever try and take the lead. He continued to sit back there. Surely he knows that his best chance is to push hard from a ways out?
He probably just wanted to make the team. And it's hot.
Qualifying in both 10k and 5k > winning 10k and failing to qualify in 5k due to fatigue
I mean grant essentially gapped him with 2 to go, but couldn’t hold it.
I’ve never seen Joe go around Grant before maybe 600 to go in a race. He just sits on his heels the whole time. He (and Kincaid imo) need to start thinking like world players rather than being on the top of the US. Together they have 1 top 10 wc/oly finish(9th) and although they are fit, I believe the 5k and 10k are going to be ratcheted down from way out this year (based on the past 2 Diamond league 5ks) and neither are going to be able to hold on.
Plus can’t sit on Grant at worlds if he’s not there so you need a new plan buddy.
Do you think he could have dropped the whole field leading from the gun? I do not.
^That might’ve sounded harsh. I just want the two of them to stop being like “give us the same respect as fisher” and actually do something on the world stage.
For sure and let us be realistic. Qualifying is like getting a medal for some of these guys. Joe is one of them. He cannot medal at global championships. This is no knock on him. Very few can. Very few can even make the team. Joe has to do everything right. He has been.
It’s get second to Woody or get second to Woody and be exhausted.
Klecker made the team at 10,000m and can return a bit fresher than if he had pushed harder to try for the 5,000m.
Klecker pushed it at the Ten in a 27:0x race and still got kicked by Woody, same with the indoor BU 5000m (12:52/12:54 I think).
he won USAs last year with a big last 100m sprint (woody DNF). As others have said, he also probably secure a selection and hammering it early in the heat could put that in jeopardy without really increasing his chances for a win.
Probably wanted to secure *
A good to great final 300m kick is a combination of several factors. Why should any U.S. 5000m &/10000m athlete push the pace the first 90% of a race due to fear of W Kincaid? W Kincaid is a 3:37.xx 1500m guy. Didn't G Fisher TT 49.xx 400m last summer? Do we know if W Kincaid defeat G Fisher and/or Klecker in a 200m dash? Maybe W Kincaid simply had more in the tank last night.
Yes, Klecker would've easily ran away from the guy with a PR 30 seconds faster than him. Not to mention that 12:51 guy as well.
The simple truth. He was pushing it as hard as he could and he was....>>>>>tired!
He qualified. EOT
There's no way Klecker went into the last lap thinking he was gonna outkick Kincaid after getting outkicked by Kincaid for the whole season off way faster paces.
IF Grant Fisher can run 49xx 400m I would be quite surprised. There are no indications of this.
