I have an athlete that I think can be pretty good. Ran 4:51 and 10:40 last year off about 30mpw. Have him ramping up mileage this summer… took about 2 weeks off at the end of track and is about 3 weeks into training. Currently at about 40mpw (6 days). During track when he ran with the team they would run around 7:00-7:30 pace. By himself I can’t get him to run faster than 8:30-8:45 pace. Some times he runs 9:00+. Today he was supposed to do a 3m tempo at 6:30-6:45 and he ran 6:55, 7:00 and 7:30 and had to stop twice. It is very hot and humid where I live but other kids on the team who he was running with are out there clipping off 7:30 pace on their runs. Something to be concerned with? Seems weird that he just can’t get going at all. He’s putting in the mileage and wants to work, but man he is laboring. I’m wondering if he’s too thin (6’2” 140lbs). I would guess he was the same during track though. Maybe the heat just bothers him more than most? I don’t know.
