USATF Outdoor National Championships is just a week away for Hobbs Kessler, Morgan Beadlescomb, and Mason Ferlic. They take on one of their last workouts bef...
Kessler Hobbs is one of the most talented athletes to come out of high school of all time, and he will prove that talent by getting a spot on the team in this years USA final.
This is obviously a relaxed prep workout to hit on different systems in a controlled way. This looks like the result of somebody who knows how to prep for the important races and when to go to the well (vs. Holt, who I’m afraid peaked for a workout for the camera)
he probably didn’t break a sweat doing this, which is what you want a week or so out. No fitness to be gained at this point, but you can certainly sabotage yourself.
Can someone explain how you peak in a workout? How does an all out workout 10 days out from a race differ from a race that far out? Shouldn't it be fine as long as you get a lot of rest? What about guys who do doubles? How can some guys run an all out 10k then come back a couple days later and run an all out 5k, while simultaneously a hard workout 10 days from the race is just too much?
It's entirely possible to run a workout a lot harder than a race and Holt did. I'm not saying he won't be recovered, but if he does poorly at the champs, people will point to this workout.

What about the reverse? If Holt does well, can we say that Jakob is talking crap? If Hobbs does poorly, maybe what he is doing is wrong?
I'd rather that he not hit a huge workout before USAs. Doing that didn't exactly work out for him two years ago when he closed the Michigan in 50. Here he got a light, race-specific workout that prepares him for the kind of race Ron Warhurst thinks he's going to get at USAs with slow to medium pace and a fast finish without cooking his legs. Holt, by contrast, did a huge, pr-type workout (with actual pr's in some of the items) and showed that he is in pr shape but will likely be cooked for USAs and then recover in time for a big pr at a less important meet afterwards. I hope he does well but that's often the case. When Jakob ran 6x800 at 2/1:55/1:49.6, that was a huge workout but importantly he had more in the tank on the last two 8s, as he said, and so it indicated he was in world record shape or close to it but it didn't kill his legs.

I think the other question is, did he taper for the workout? Once you drop aerobic volume (just workouts or straight mileage), you recover slower but feel faster. If he isn't careful, that would lead to staleness at USAs. If his coach knows what he's doing, this guy is DANGEROUS. My gut says they messed up slightly and he'll perform well, but not up to his own expectations and will feel disappointed post USAs.
It doesn't even matter, the goal was some steady state running..and shorter intervals accelerating last piece which is likely the way these tactical affairs will be.. Ron knows what he he is doing, he has been right on the mark this outdoors. Thought he could run 3:32.x ..and 1:45.x. Thats what he did.
