He ran 13:37 6 weeks ago and said right after that he wanted to go to Europe to chase 13:20s. The record is 13:34 now, so if he breaks the record, he's not far from 13:20s. Of course, in August, Brosnan said the Youngs would be in 13:20s shape now. Lex managed 13:34, but Leo could probably run 13:20s.
In April Burns ran 8:41 at Arcadia for 3200, way off the win. A couple weeks ago, he ran 8:34 for 2 miles kicking to the line with Birnbaum. That's 7 seconds right there (more like 11 really) for 2 miles. He wasn't even close to Birnbaum in the mile last weekend, so maybe he's been training for the 5k record. I honestly didn't think he'd get it the first time, and he's surely got the talent. Rupp ran 4:01/8:4x/13:37, and Burns ran 3:58 as a junior/8:34/13:37 already. I'm erring on the side of him not getting it just because a lot has to go right, but I'd say he's the most likely to run 13:29 besides Leo this year.
At the very least I'm excited to see him go for it. I'd be happy if every top high schooler went to Europe chasing times after their senior year. I know if I had the chance to go to Europe as my post-graduation trip, I'd have done it. Getting to chase a record would just be icing on the cake.
For a minute I was thinking maybe he should stop racing and go into a base phase for XC season. Then I realized he should race to his heart’s content since once he shows up in Oregon he might not race for 10 months.

I don't even think the field will be pushing much below 13:30 if they even get that. He's going to have to win that race or be way at the front of the pack pushing the pace to break the record imo.
He can't hang back like what Lex, Rupp and Burns did (in his last attempt)
you talking about xc season? The race is tomorrow. How is running an all out 5k tomorrow going to hurt him in the long run?
Some of you will learn the hard way.
after this race he'll have to start preparing for xc like a week or two later tops compared to if he doesn't race. Regardless of whether he races tomorrow or not, he may have a crappy xc season for whatever reason. dude over here thinks he's nostradamus. condescending "you'll see, i told you so" mf

You are one of the ones who would destroy young athletes. Of course I know better than you. Never coach or advise a young athlete. You are not smart enough.
