2021 US Olympic Trials - 20yo Cole Hocker does the shhh while beating defending Olympic champion Matt Centrowitz.
2023 NBON Mile - Simeon Birnbaum does it to punk Leo Young at the line.
Name other good shhh-ing.
I did not understand the Birnbaum one at the end of his race. Leo Young and the other Newbury guys did not say anything publicly about Birnbaum as far as I know. Rather, it was him and his future teammate Burns who said the Youngs were dodging races. Had Leo won the race, it might have made more sense for him as a celebration.
facts. birnbaum shushing leo is kinda funny bc leo quite literally didn’t say anything about him/the drama created. even after the race in a interview leo said he didn’t engage in the villain/hero thing and hoped it was playful. Plus the race played to birnbaums favor with it being tactical in the rain. No one was gonna out kick him so the results weren’t surprising. Everyone wanted Simeon/leo 1-2 finish. Leo was similing and laughing across the line so hopefully he’s not taking it to heart. Both are great and gotta be the top two runners of their class.

Why do people get to talk endless trash from anonymous keyboards and then many of the same people get upset when professional athlete, whose job is to win, talk a little trash (or do a gesture to talk trash) when they win? I love shh-ing mostly because I can picture how much I would absolutely hate to get shh-ed in competition. For the person shh-ing, it's the singular moment of validation they have been working for. For the crowd, it's free drama and entertainment which we all know trask & field needs. For the losing athletes, it's free fuel for the fire for 2nd-8th in any final for the next match up. Only people deciding how appropriate shh-ing is should be the athletes in position to win and shush their competition.
I thought it was the unclean spirits within these vessels causing the vessel to make the gesture in reference to keeping the truth that Satan rules this world for now a secret to the masses....
I thought it was poor sportsmanship and a disqualification would have been reasonable. I say that as someone who was disappointed with the decision to disqualify MD HS runner Brody Buffington at States. Brody was disqualified in regionals for an action somewhat similar to the shhh and was disqualified. At States all Brody did was raise his arm about 25 ft before the finish. The shh gesture directed to other runners was disrespectful and inappropriate, especially for a high school runner.
