With today's NON Mile, I think we've come to the end of an era. The past 4 years, we've seen the most dominant and influential high school in T&F history constantly at the peak of the sport. While they may still be good on the national stage in the future, I don't think we'll ever see something quite like them again, in large part due to the influence they had on the rest of the country.
The Youngs and the Sahlmans inspired all of the top athletes you see today, challenging them to rise to the same level. They have lived rent-free in every athlete's head for the past 4 years (see: Birnbaum and Burns firing shots at them all year to no reply). They, along with Sean Brosnan, have singlehandedly raised the bar for high school athletes by showing them what's possible. To all the people who got mad at Brosnan for saying "4:20 isn't fast for a high school mile, it just isn't", I hope you can see what he meant now. 4 years ago a 3:39 guy would have looked like the second coming of Christ. Today, a 3:39 guy got destroyed in the last 30m of a race. I promise you that no one in the field today thinks 4:20 is fast. That doesn't mean 4:20 isn't a great achievement for some (most) people, but 6:00 is a great achievement for some (most) people, it just isn't fast for a high schooler. The reaction from kids at my HS was "4:20 is fast here, but it's not gonna win state", because 4:20 stopped winning state.
Nico Young's NXN win was the first race I ever got excited for that I wasn't participating in. I'm super excited to follow all of these kids through their college and pro careers, but I wanted to give a moment to remember the insanity that has been the last 4 years of NP. Even beyond the top 5, I remember when Jace ran 8:44 and a little switch went off in my brain and I felt like there was no reason I couldn't run that fast. Following NP was probably the most important thing for me getting into the sport, and they inspired me enough to drop 2 minutes off my 5k time my senior year (it was nowhere near as good as 8:44 lol). I'd never heard kids on my team talk about anyone outside of our state until NP came along, and funnily enough, within 2 years we had 3x the number of guys under 5:00, and 2 guys under 4:20 for the first time ever.
It's been fun, and based off of how Nico and Colin are doing in college, it's gonna be a really fun next 4 years too.
