I read on Reddit and Slickdeals that Saucony reps are quietly telling people that the Saucony will no longer be updating their performance line of running shoes on an annual basis. The brand is moving to a two-year cycle. This means that popular shoes such as the Endorphin Speed will only see updates every other year.
Saucony reps have also told certain people, including a poster at r/RunningShoeGeeks that the much anticipated Endorphin Speed 4 (and Pro 4) will not be released until April 2024.
I'm absolutely shocked by this bit of news. The veracity of this secondhand information seems to be legit. SoleReview, a website that maintains a Release Calendar for shoes, still has August 2023 pinned as the expected release date for the upcoming Endorphins. There's reason to believe that SoleReview's dates are obsolete which I detail below.
For one thing Saucony decided not to discount the endorphins for Memorial Weekend as they did in previous years.
Secondly, over at Running Warehouse, a leading online running shoe store, they are now accepting pre-orders for a... wait for it... new color way of the Speed 3. Not the Speed 4! There's zero chance that Saucony would release a new color way for an existing version of the Speed of they had any intention of launching a new update for the Speed this year.
To conclude, it appears that Saucony is taking a page from brands such as Brooks and HOKA and reducing the frequency of shoe model updates. This strategy probably makes business sense by cutting costs and shoring up pricing. Stretching out the time in-between updates means they spend less on moulds, design, materials procurement, ect. It also means less clearance sales. Instead of annual clearance sales for cheapskates like myself, Saucony and their retail partners only have to absorb those lower margin sales once every two years.
I respect the strategy but I'm disappointed that we have to wait another 10 months for new Endorphin updates and most importantly, clearance sales on the Speed 3.
If anyone has read or heard anything about this topic please chime in with the deets.
It should also be noted that late last month as this info began to leak out, Saucony's parent company, Wolverine Worldwide (ticker: WWW) announced a big shakeup at the company. This included naming a new President of Operations and a new executive for the company's Active Group, a division of the company that includes brands such as Merrell and Saucony. Within the Active Group there are individual executives (presidents) of each brand. The leader of the Saucony brand stepped down last month and resigned. They appointed a new executive to head the brand.
Saucony makes compelling shoes. They are innovative. Much better than Brooks or HOKA. But the brand seems to be failing to generate consistent profit growth. Sales at Wolverine Worldwide are down year over year while HOKA's gross sales have grown over 20.
