Self-explanatory title. Stands to reason that the best marathon shoe may differ from the best mile/5k shoe. What are folks wearing?
I'd go with Takumi Sens 8/9, but it's not a shoe you can use for fulls (or maybe even halves) reliably depending on your preferred comfort level. So its utility is limited, making it a "how deep are your pockets" question.
From a strictly "thrust to weight ratio" + overall utility (race/workout/long run) standpoint, it's hard to vote against the VF3, which is 20-30g lighter than most of its immediate competitors.
If I were to choose a shoe specifically to run a road mile in I would definetly go with NewBalance fuelcell 5280. This is a shoe specificaly designed for the road mile, max up to a 5k. I think you should be good with this one, it's kind of a blend between a racing flat, a carbon supershoe and a track spike, giving you all the performance in a minimalist packadge!

Haha what? Have you even tried the Takumi Sen? It's way more cushioned than any pre-Vaporfly marathon racer. People were breaking records in Adios Boosts not that long ago, and the current Takumi Sens look like max cushion marshmallow shoes in comparison.

Yes, I own a pair of 8s. They are quite firm, nothing like the Adios Pro or Prime X in terms of softness. They have some stack height yes, but in my book it's mainly there to contain the carbon rods. I would NOT want to run more than 10 miles in them (I run 80-100mpw). YMMV--you said "looks like", so I'm guessing you haven't worn them.

You guessed wrong. I own a pair and they're one of the softest shoes I have. It's mind boggling to me that someone could describe them as firm, but I guess that's why there's such a huge selection out there!
