Burley (Idaho) junior Gatlin Bair just ran 10.15 and 20.41 to set the overall Idaho State Meet records in the prelims at the 4A State Meet. Both times were wind legal.
Honestly, it looks like he had even more in him in each race. Sub 10.10 and sub 20.30 isn’t out of the question tomorrow.
Gatlin Bair, an Idaho sprinter and receiver, will play one more season of high school football before graduating early and moving on to the next chapter of his life.

I've been following him. It's an absolute shame he isn't running track his senior year. And that he isn't running in college. I never blame anyone for choosing football, as it can pay millions, but he is already faster than a yone in the NFL. He should at least play football and run track in college.

I get it. If I was in his position I would do the same thing. NFL is an infinitely better prospect for money than track - not even considering which one he enjoys more, which is probably football.
I'm keeping my eye on the results tomorrow. Assuming he gets a fair wind, 10.0 and 20.2.
Still though, as a massive fan of the sport this is a huge loss. I never say this about HS sprinters - but I think he would have a real shot at sub-10 next year. He is that good. Unbelievable progression.

Yes he should sprint when possible in college. While doing a professional degree I trained with the team. We had 3 fast football guys who came out and actually competed indoors, one of whom medaled at nats. They all went nfl, although none lasted more than 3 years. 2 transferred to cfl.
Football and indoor season sprint training are complementary. Heck even early outdoor stuff—look at Nyckoles Harbor, and others. Bair will be training, regardless of whether he competes. Sprint training can be like a sub-unit of the football program, for certain positions.
