why does USATF have a 20k, half, and 25k championship?
This janky, piecemeal circuit is what passes for professional marathon development in our country anymore. Even though there isn't a US marathon champs every year. 🤦

Technically, they have 20km, half marathon and 25 km championships.
Been that way for decades.
I think it used to be just a defacto thing. The 15k, 20k and 25k are just historic top level US races that have been going on for decades. Peachtree used to hold the 10k road champs but I guess it rotates around now.
It is a road running circuit with US prize money. That's why there is a 5k, 10k, 15k, 20k, half-marathon, 25k....

You're leaving some out. There's a USATF 5k, 10k, 12k, 15k, 10 mile, 20k, HM, and 25k. Gault has commented on this and suggested it's like having a 60m, 100m, 150m, 200m, etc., but that is pretty close to what they do, in fact, have. He threw in 150, but if you get rid of that, it's exactly what they hold. Now, I feel these road distances are more finely graduated than necessary, so I ultimately agree with the gist of JG's opinion.

No top marathoners would run it unless it was the trials to qualify for a world or Olympic team

I don't see the issue, other than the half-marathon champs always seems too close to the others.
Would ya'll rather there be FEWER races on a CIRCUIT?
