He's 29 years old now. Kind of old for a 1500m runner. None of the top 100 in the world are 30 or older, and not may who are 29. He hasn't exactly been on his 'A' game last year and didn't show anything so far this year. I think it's a little too late for him to return to a top level. His best year was 2019 at age 25, four years ago. Pretty common for a 1500m runner to be at their best around that age. Seems the prime age for 5k/10k is a couple years later around age 27 give or take a year.
Caught a recent podcast, he was dodgy about this year’s plans but did talk a bit about Paris.
plus some of the usual chatter about the RV park he’s going to open.
sport is better on the American side when he’s on the track. They’re both too likable and nice to admit it but an Engels / Nuguse beef would be spectacular.
Explain to me why a guy that looks like a redneck and acts like a redneck is "good for the sport."
Because … he’s likable, fun and real.
He is likable, fun and real or at least appears to be so. Imagine how great it would have been if he had his priorities in order. He could have been a game changer if he could have just won or competed better. There was so much promise when he beat Centro at USAs back in 2018 or '19. Maybe it's not too late, but Engels seems to need to grow up a little. The men's 1500 on the world level is no longer a place for the timid, sit and kickers, distracted skippedy-doo-das.
