- TimC runs 7:36 in his first ever 3000 and gets called washed, - Fauble runs his third sub2:10 at Boston and gets called a non-factor, - Mantz opens in 62, bonks and still finishes in 2:10 but it's called a bad run, - Tuohy runs a Collegiate 5000m record and its suggested she's already peaked for not breaking 15,
but a Centro 3:40 is respectable? The entry standard alone for Budapest is 3:34 & the USATF National Champs is in less than 2months

My brother in christ, he is just now recovering from knee surgery, this is a very good sign for that, we don’t expect him to be a world beater yet

Exactly. I have NO idea why Centro is held to a different standard than anyone one these boards. No matter how many shoddy and sun-par times he runs people thing he’s the same 3:30 guy and Olympic Champ he was so many years ago. Stick a fork in him, he’s done.

It’s because he always runs poor earlier in the year even in his best years. Yes he’s past his prime, but he could still make the Olympic team next year especially with Hocker seemingly disappearing off the face of the earth
I suspect letsrun is at a point where a large percentage of commenters are too young to remember much of Centro's career. Makes me feel like a fossil but I think it would be hard to appreciate the yearly tradition of a few sub-par Centro races in April/May followed by a dominant USA 1500 win, a few poor summer races and then a global medal without having witnessed it. Like clockwork.

Y’all really gotta understand this dude had Knee surgery at 32/33 years old. He ain’t a spring chicken. At 22/23 he would have Bounced right back but at his age he’s only 6 years from 40, it’s gonna take some time to get back to that shape. I would take my sweet time just like he’s doing because if he rushes this and gets hurt to that extent again you can best believe it’s time to hang em up. Not everyone is going to go all the way to 40+ like Lagat did, centro may but Kip never had a major surgery during his peak years. Look how long Wheatings been out the game and he was only a year or so older than centro. Look what injuries have done to rupp.
Centro put himself in the B heat, he isn’t coming into this stupidly with ego, he’s thinking about the next few years, y’all just gotta chill 3:40 is solid at this point, we’ve seen this before, next race he will go 3:37/38 and then be ready for USAs. I don’t see him making the team but I’m sure he if he makes the final he will give it a crack. Lastly, where is 10 yr younger hocker? Exactly

Centro said he was not going to do well this year. Even at the Olympic Trials he will not do well against our young talent.
and still no explanation why he is no longer on BTC. One event athletes that are old usually have a quick exit. He will not make anymore national teams.
I'm not suggesting he will. I just don't think it's unreasonable to think he could surprise some people. None of our young talent won a global medal when they were 21 and on a college team. He has zero pressure to perform and a ton of upside. It's fun!
3:40 is very encouraging for Centro at this point. He tends to come around much more slowly. Getting into 3:34-35 shape by trials is not that unrealistic. 7:36 was a pr for Timothy Cheruiyot, whose early results have been very encouraging for fans of the 1500m looking to see a full-strength Tim going against a full-strength Jakob this year.
Of course Centro is finished. But by that I mean he will never run even 3:33 again. This is obvious. He could become a decent road racer running 27:30ish 10Ks. He could do that for a few years if he stays healthy and motivated. Otherwise of course he is finished.
Setting aside the young guns who I think the majority of people on these boards think will make the team (Nuguese, Teare assume he runs the 15 at USAs), I’m much more interested in seeing if someone who has reached the mountain top (Centro) can make another team than if someone who has zero shot of medaling can squeak onto the team based on the convoluted qualifying process.
He doesn't need to be, but he certainly could be again. He isn't that old. And people on this board know how great he is tactically. One of the best we've ever seen imo. He obviously wasn't the fastest runner at rio yet he found a way to win. Good championship record speaks for itself. So he just needs to be close to be a contender at the us level. It would be foolish to count him out.

He is a tactical wizard but part of what permitted his wizardry to shine was his ability to accelerate in a split second. He doesn’t have this advantage anymore so it will be interesting.
