Male 27 years old, two main goals before july : sub 32min for 10 k and sub 9 for the 3000 m. Disclaimer : english is my third language and I am used to the metric system ! So my wording can be a bit funny to your american eyes :).
52 miles this week.
M off
T Hill Rep : 6 time 320 m with 36 ft of climbing controled effort recovery = 1min50 downhill job, then 4 times 320 m FAST with longer rest (2min30) split : 62, 62, 61, 60, 59, 59 and 56, 56, 58, 56. I finished that workout with 3x100 m hill sprint. The speed for the hill rep hovered between 5:08 and 4:33 pace for that session. I had a really good feeling that day. At first I wanted to do a track workout but I couldn't because of my work schedule. Next week, I'll drive to a nearby track and add some 300 m flat rep after the hill.
W : 55 min jog + 15 min core
T : Long Fartlek : 6 k wu with drills and 4 strides + 30 min hilly tempo (8.8k @ 5:31 pace), then on a flat route 3 x 3min30 @ 10 k / lt effort (5:09 pace) + 5x30/30 @ mile pace
F 45 min job
S 35 min jog + drills and 8 hill sprints
Sun : Fartlek over a hilly loop (1.35 k with around 22 feet of climbing) with some muddy section : 4.2 k @ 10 k / LT effort (5:15 pace) + 2 x 1.4 k @ 5 k / 10 k effort (5:10 pace). That workout was pretty nice but I had some stomach issue due to a late launch which bothered me at the end of the workout. It was also hard to keep an even pace because it was REALLY windy (45 km/h).

Complete break from running this week so nothing to report. Feel recovered but didn't run. Coach told me to take the week to do everything I wouldn't normally have done and recharge. Rode bikes all over DC, sporadic hiking trips, long walks, movies & videogames and beers. Did a lot of catching up and planning for work and a few other things.
He also suggested I sign up for CIM, thinks we have a shot at trying to go sub 2:40 or get close. So I got until December 3rd to be consistent with that. Very excited to go with my dad and mom, she's never been to California (neither have I).
Started putting in extra hour bartending to try and save for a plane ticket next year, lets see how that goes.
AFF - CIM is a great choice if you have a time goal. And congrats on last week!
(from last week:)
WinorLose#whyD3- "I ran my best race I could that day" - that's key. I honestly believe that if you just always try to run the best race you have in you each race, the times will come.
RunnerSam- I didn't see a report from you yet - saving it for this week? Or did I overlook it?

Th: 90 minutes pool-running and upper body weights/core.
F: 11 miles, including a 6400m track tempo in 27:37 (7:03/6:56/6:54/6:43. Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
Sa: 10.5 miles very easy (9:03), plus drills and strides, followed by streaming yoga.
Su: 14.5 miles progressive, split as first 5 miles averaging 9:17 pace; next 5.5 miles averaging 7:53 pace (partially with a tailwind); next 4 miles averaging 7:31 pace (with headwind). Followed with leg strengthwork and 500 yards recovery swimming.
My mileage is artificially high this week because I took one of my recovery pool-running days on Sunday instead of Monday, resulting in one week at 50 miles and the next week at 67 miles. Had I swapped those two days, then I would have had two weeks at 58 and 59 miles - essentially even. Which just shows how weekly mileage is not always that great a metric to focus on. In my case, average mileage over 14 days is a much better metric.
I remain really happy with how things are progressing. For the second week in a row, I was actually able to run hard during the Tuesday workout, with the welcome result that I ran an 800m repeat in under 3:10 for the first time since September 2021. Of course, in that September 2021 workout I also ran an 800m repeat in under 3 minutes, so I still have a lot of work ahead of me.
But I'm feeling positive - I think one of my big limiters has been that I haven't been able to run much faster than tempo pace at any distance, even 100m, due to the dystonia/neuro stuff. And that's hurt my fitness. Now that things are working a bit better, I can train more effectively.

Work travel and ankle tendon problems limited workouts this week.

Good running at Boston!
Congrats, AverageForFun, looks like it came together for you. Not sure what side of town you’re on, but if your biking leads you to the Anacostia Trail, that’s where I do the bulk of my mileage. (Not necessarily worth a special trip, but good running/biking.)
BeersAndMiles, I think that’s a solid result for you, even if not quite your goal.
WinOrLose, I think you’re very capable of running under 2:30 on a tough course, but marathons are tricky, and Boston particularly so. You’re young and likely have many years to build that experience if you want to.

After Saturday’s run, decided to retire my surgically-altered Boston 11s after only a few hundred miles. Last week I made some cuts to the uppers out of desperation, which relieved pressure, but caused other problems. I had been getting inflammation in a few tendons around both ankles and also a ganglion cyst (a lump of fluid that leaked from a tendon). But now parts of the upper are detaching from the midsole, causing new stresses, there is more inflammation, and this is just a chain reaction that will lead toward injury.
I have another pair of Boston 11s (bought 2 pairs at $75/each—a sunk cost I can handle), and may eventually try darkwave’s suggestion with the makeup pads. But for now I ordered a clearance pair of Pegasus Turbos, and will use my old Boston 10s (with 1900+ miles) until they arrive.

Race report to come, but hit 2:57:30 in a lot of rain at Jersey City. Not quite a PR, but considering the conditions (puddles, pretty heavy rain) and I hit the main objective (safe BQ) I’m very pleased. Felt like I kept the powder dry for some good summer racing too. Excited to build on it.

Nothing too special but I will include my Boston write up,
PreRace: (logistics) Drove up on Saturday. Monday morning up at 7AM, left AirBnB by 8, to the South St Shuttle and on the shuttle by 9 (about 20 minutes longer than expected due to traffic), dropped off at athletes village at 9:15 ish, missed our time to leave the village and get the the corrals by a few minutes so jogged to the corrals and used the CVS area portapots (wife, not me). Got in the corral with about 20minutes to spare. Would probably leave 30min earlier next time.
PreFood: Everything Bagel and Banana before leaving, Maurten 320CAF mix while traveling and finished before the start. SIS gel 15min prior to start.
RaceFood: Maurten Gels at 6 11 and 16, took one at 21ish but spit it out. Water from most aid stations the first half, mix of water and Gatorade the second half. 2 Salt Stick tablets at ~10 and ~20 (4 total) which I carried the packet of in my hat.
Attire: Singlet, Shortshorts, Hat, Adidas Sen Takumi 8s (Gel in each hand, salt stick packet in hat)

By Tracking Half: 1:22:15, 1:24:32
Race: First half mile or so was slow but I kept with the people around me, after that I tried to settle into my prehill goal of 6:15-6:20 (6:20-6:25 effort). On my watch I split every 5k and have my 'lap pace' up so I can see my pace since I last split it. Over the first half every time I checked I was running a bit too quick (6:12-6:15) so I kept trying to keep it under control. I let the miles pass by enjoying the race by high fiving kids, engaging with the crowd and talking to fellow runners. Around 15k I had my hip(?) start to get that familiar feeling of messed up stride (shortened, out of sync with right leg, ect), however I heard somewhere that CJ Albertson squeezes his glutes during the race for hip/glute so I tried that and either that worked or slightly slowing down worked. The fear associated with it left as quickly as it came which was a huge relief. I don't quite remember when I felt normal again but I don't think it was long and I felt fine the rest of the race (as it relates to hip issue). Other than lack of fitness that was my biggest fear of the day. By midway I had a dozen or so people that I was keying off of pace-wise throughout, I used them as a gauge until about the top of heartbreak. I knew there were four Newton Hills and I took each one of them really easy on the up, I had dozens of people pass me each hill. But they didn't take much out of me and I tried to work the downhills after them. I had a lot of uncertainty whether I was going to 'make it' (with dignity/on pace) so from about 25k on I just focused on getting to 35k then I would be close enough to the finish to grit it out. Once I got to the top of heartbreak I knew it was all downhill and I really didn't feel any better or worse than I did at halfway so I decided to push pretty hard. I kept this up well but at around 24 I was questioning whether I should be pushing too hard and whether I would make it. So for a little while I stuck behind somebody going a decent pace and bided my time till my last push, with about three quarter miles to go I went into my final push which got me to the finish. I wasn't keeping track of my overall time well so I figured I was running a higher 2:4X than I was and was pleased to see that I managed to run under 2:47. The whole time I was waiting to get passed by my wife but she ended up running a bit slower than she was capable due to being sick the whole week leading up (still coughing a week later). She still managed a solid time with a 2:54:X.
Takaways: (Boston) The crowd support at Boston is great and we had different people we knew throughout the course cheering us on. It was wild to be at the top of a hill and see a huge column of runners ahead of me all running low 6s, I've not experienced that anywhere else and it was much more enjoyable than the solo final 18 miles I ran in my first marathon.
(Race) I had a really strong final 5 miles and I don't know why. (How I felt, not just the paces). I was well fueled, I was wearing supershoes (ish) for the first time in a marathon, I took the hills really easy. I took salt stick electrolyte tablets during the race for the first time. I've always felt that if the last handful of miles of a marathon goes too well than the prior miles might not have been quick enough, I don't necessarily think that here but something to keep in mind. I'd love to know how many people I passed on the final miles, I'd guess over 100. Weather was great, probably a 1 in 10 type year. Could have lived without the rain post race but during was fine.
General - I wrote this up last week but I had to take out the irrelevant-to-anybody-but-me/personal/off topic stuff for y'all. I am happy with the race and felt like I performed well and raced well given my ability on race day. It was a lot logistically but can understand the appeal of the Boston. I am not sure when my next marathon will be, maybe Fall of 2024 (NYC?). I feel like my Philly time in 2021 was close to my max while still having my shorter distance PRs so I'd like to work on them next.
hhw - Solid workouts!
HillyGuy - Welcome to the thread, looks like a lot of quality squeezed in that week.
darkwave - I couldn't decide on minimalist of maximalist race report, I ended up closer to the latter. I am guessing your goal is at least under 70 at BS10, maybe more like sub 68. Glad training is continuing to trend upward!
Sub 6 - You've had a lot of quality and workouts recently so nothing wrong with a mileage week to soak some fitness in, nice job getting each day in while traveling.
notarobot - Nice week!
Thoughtsleader - Glad you got your BQ, looking forward to seeing how the race played out.

W: 5x5' threshold efforts with 1' rests, went way better than I expected (especially for 6:30 AM). 7:55 pace -> 7:28, felt excellent, true threshold effort. jogged about 5' to a good hill, then 4x 20" hill sprints. A good morning.
Sa: Severe storms drove me to the treadmill. Workout was 5x [2' (1') 1' (1')] with the 2's at 10k effort and the 1's at 5k effort. Treddy at 1% grade. "10k" speed was 7.9 squeezing down to 8.2 mph, "5k" speed 8.2->8.5, recoveries all between 5.8-6 mph. Felt shockingly smooth, like I could go forever. Pleased to say the least!
Easy 90' over decent hills on Sunday. Didn't mean to jump up my mileage this quick (sorry, coach!) but I was just running what felt good and then felt sheepish on Sunday when I tallied it all up. Ah, well, I felt good all week! 10% rule be damned!
Quick check in after 5x10k relay.
Course is ~100ft uphill first 5k then comes back down. Plan was to go out at 6 flat pace and try to roll the downhills on the second half. Was ~35F and sleeting, yuck. Went out with someone who said he was trying to run 5:50-600 and we were a bit slow, 6:05 avg the first uphill 5k and I was on my own at ~4k. I struggled to flip the mental switch from "go out conservative" to "race mode" and came in with a 37:20. Relay team ended up in 2nd place in 3:05 and got beat by 3 solo 50k runners.
Maybe do a trail 5k/15k in a couple weeks. Only time will tell.

Nice write-up RS (I'll copy your formatting!), and very happy you finished the race strong and without the stride issue. I heard a similar CJ thing too and tried to switch up my stride a little bit early/middle of my race to prevent against cramping or just muscle fatigue. Also, heeded your advice on fueling earlier.
Here was my week:
M: OFF. Lot of fun encouraging marathoners at mile 18.6 in Boston near where I grew up. In retrospect, I should've gotten all your guys' tracking stuff. Definitely recognized beersandmiles though.
T: 5.1M @ 8:06
W: 5.5 ft 6x2' at MP with 1' off (Tried this Adios Pro 2, which flared up some arches/heel issue. Made decision to go with Next %s easy, even if it rained a lot. First and last I ran around 6:30, rest were 6:45-6:50. Easy workout)
TH: 4.4R @ 8:25
F: OFF. Picked up number at Expo. In and out, bare bones experience but I didn't mind.
SA: 2.6R @ 9:24
PreRace: Boy, the MTA picked a great time to stink. I had to catch a PATH train at 5:25 at 33/6, which should've been simple . Long story short, trains were delayed/not running (there were 3 large races in the NYC area so great timing), had to take an Uber en route outside of a train station to * just * make the PATH. From there it was easy and we got to the station about a quarter mile from the corrals at 6:00ish. It was raining hard, and we kept in the shelter of train station. At 6:15 I did a jog to the port-a. Upon return I changed into race shoes/attire and then did drills and short strides outside the station (protected from the rain).
PreFood: Woke up around 4 (not much sleep per usual). Had a PB&J, and some fruit. On the transportation over had about 24 oz of water with 2 caffeinated nuuns (roughly cup of coffee's worth)
RaceFood: 3 Maurten (uncaffeinated), at miles 5.3, 10.5ish and 16ish, got two bottles about 10oz worth from wife with half a caffeinated Nuun (smooth execution) at mile 12 and 16, mostly took water, tho occasionally powerbar drinks, didn't need much after the bottles (felt very hydrated ~ which was new)
Attire: Lulu Dryfit (it didn't stay dry) T-shirt, short shorts, Nike Next %, hat, phone/gels in running pack
First Half of Race: Kept my throw away long sleeve shirt on as long as possible, and stayed sheltered until 5 mins before the race. Took off the shirt and held it over my head, as it was raining hard. Corrals were great/easy, pretty relaxed and not crowded. Found 90' pacer.
Gun goes and I'm focused on relaxing and tracking that group. It's raining pretty hard, but at least it's high 50s so not really getting cold. I do my best to just cruise and turn my brain off, but there are a lot of puddles and the footing in Jersey City is inconsistent (manholes, lot of pavement repairs etc.), so focusing on the road and paying attention to other runners signaling. Mile 2 my shoes comes untied and I reluctantly (and correctly peel off to fix that). Catch up to the group pretty easily.
It's raining pretty consistently all race. I'd say 25% hard, 50% moderate, 25% light. Pretty early on everyone is soaked. There's some bike path areas where you gotta dart onto the grass or the far outside to avoid running in huge puddles. I'd say the first 10 miles with the large pack, I ran a good deal extra (.2 ish). The last 16 miles with a clearer road, more like .1 extra. I felt really easy with the pacer, and never really had any adversity. I was happy to see a decent chunk of the people running with me were doing the full. Here are rough splits (2miles): 13:52 (includes tying shoe), 13:41, 13:47, 13:36, 13:38, 13:37, 13:37.
Second Half of Race: Got a nice boost from seeing my wife and some friends after mile 12 back in downtown. Also got a bottle. The HM'ers (and pacers) were leaving us, but on the positive side there was a good group still around so no no-man's land. Hit the half in 1:29:40, and felt better than I've ever felt at half. I keep the 6:40s pace going, which is methodically moving me up. I run a 6:43.7 (mile 15) and catch up to a group of 4 or 5. I'm balancing feeling really easy, but also trying to be careful because the last 5 miles of a marathon have always been a struggle for me thus far. With a group (and a bottle/gel) I run 6:53.2 for mile 16 (GPS has this mile as 1.04), and I feel them slowing and myself running extra, so I pick it up slightly. Mile 17 and 18 are 6:38s. Mile 19 (6:52) has one of the few uphills ahead of a plateau at mile 20 (6:42) and mile 21 (6:35, some downhill). These are quieter, more isolated sections. I'm mostly keeping my eyes forward, reeling in runners here and there. The rain does pick up for miles 22-24 (6:45, 6:48, 6:48). Runners are pretty few and far between for me as I slowly pass a few. My right quad is getting a little tight and twingey. Not bad that I'm worried about it cramping hard on me, but just enough for a little bit of concern (I don't want to sprint). First and really only concern in the race. Mile 25 (6:39) we start getting into town, I go to the side for a high-five with my wife. Now there're more people to pass, though we do a series of turns and then a narrow bikepath so it's a bit of an endeavor clearing room. I'm still feeling totally fresh. I do see with roughly a mile to go I'll need a chunk under sub-6 to hit my PB (2:56:53). Wasn't really a big-time goal for me and I think it'd be reckless to attempt a very hard last mile with my tight quad. I run a little under 6:15 pace the last 1.2 feeling well within myself. With about 100 to go after passing a few people we do a turn for home and abruptly there's the finish line. I am not going to pass the guy 10 meters in front of me, so I cruise it in 2:57:30 (~1:29:35chip,1:27:55 split) and a BQ by 7.5 minutes. Finished 75th overall.
Takeaways: This felt to me like a real workmanlike effort. There really wasn't any part of the race where I felt strained, fatigured or worried. It was...comfortable. The race plan of staying with the 90' pacer had something to do with it. At my fitness level running that pace with drafting on a mostly flat course in manageable conditions (even with the rain/puddles) was well within myself. I fueled and hydrated better than in previous marathons (though maybe would've liked to have a gel to take in mile 21). I was better prepared too with more mileage and longer threshold workouts. It's hard to say how much the rain/puddles affected my time or pushed this effort (e.g. what I'd run on a clear day). I felt really good after the race minus tight muscles. I'm pretty excited that I can get back to training/racing shorter stuff soon. I think the Half (1:20:52) even not really tapered was probably more on my fitness level. If that had been THE race, maybe I could've gone under 80 minutes or faster, who knows. Either way very happy with this build and nailing the BQ and possibly New York too. Those are the two ones I want to do, and from there I'll be content to try to run really fast in 5Ks, 4milers, 10Ks or miles. I felt a ton of relief to get the BQ for the second time, and this time I just need to not get COVID ahead of the 2024 race. I think I've built a lot of fitness/based and am excited to see how well I can go this summer/fall.
Thoughtsleader - PreRace sounds stressful, race fueling was good, Rough with the early shoe tie, I had to tie mine during my PR marathon, late enough into the race not to throw off the mental game but early enough that I could actually bend down (~mi 17), glad you grouped with the 90min pace group for the first 10, Looks like you successfully completed your prerace plan with a nice little negative split and BQ.

Yep all went to plan once the gun went off, which was a big relief. The shoe tying wasn’t so bad in the sense that it was so early I could just put in a little bit of 6:30 pace and downshift. 90’ pace group was great and it was nice they didn’t become the 87’ pace group. The second half was more lonely than I thought it might be, but I do my long runs alone and squeeze down the end of those. Felt like another day at the office except for the rain for sure. My quads are improving and I’m hopeful to get on the road soon with races looking like June 21 (5k), July 4 (5 mile) July 16 (5K) August 6 (mile) and then 5th Ave mile too.
Congrats to AFF, WinorLose, RunnerSam, Thoughtsleader, and beersandmiles on your races. I enjoyed reading through each of your reports. Extra congrats to beers for winning another race to Trackhouse right after finishing.
