Webb, Sahlman and Kessler are now the only 3 HSers to run faster than him. FWIW Kessler ran 3:40 on April 26th, then 3:34 a month later. Kessler is an unreal talent, but Leo ran 4:00 as a junior last March, and ran 3:39 tonight with a good close after focusing on XC through Febuary. What should we be expecting later this summer? Could he break the mile record?

Expect nothing this summer . . . will race into June then shut it down prior to college xc.
But what could we expect from Leo this spring?
A new hs record in the 5k . . . possibly even sub-13:30 given his uninterrupted training since last summer and now a 3:57-equivalent mile . . . which could come as early as Soundrunning's TrackFEST on May 6 if he/Lex enter it (may conflict with prom night if I heard them correctly in a recent podcast) . . .
I know this has been repeated ad nauseum but the sheer coincidence of the Sahlman and Young children coming together at one high school is remarkable. With much of the outdoor season still to go look at what these guys have done, just this weekend: the guy who kickstarted the Newbury Park mini dynasty, Nico Young, opts to run the 2nd fastest heat in the 5K in order to assist his brother Lex. Nico cruises to a 13:30.36 win and high schooler Lex runs a solid 13:44.83. The other Young brother, Leo, another high schooler, runs 3:39.39 in his heat of the 1500, finishing 2nd. After a somewhat slow start to his college career Colin Sahlman comes back with a nice closing kick in his 1500 heat, finishing 2nd in 3:38.30. And finally, his younger brother Aaron, another high schooler, starts the weekend with a 1:49.19 800 and tonight finishes 2nd in his 1500 heat in 3:43.52.
Blue 7, I’ll join you on the ad nauseam count. I’ve posted excessively about the Youngs and Sahlmans, because we’ll never see the distance running gods ever concoct the likes of them again. Simply consider this: On a single U.S. high school team at the same moment in time, you had two sets of five brothers who each demonstrated the sheer range of talent to conceivably break the American high school 5000 meter record on their best day at different points during their high school careers. Five brothers! (You’d be hard pressed to find a single other high school program in the history of our nation who could even boast two teammates who at different times/years who could realistically achieve the same thing). As they finish up their high school careers, it’s a bit of a pity they didn’t broaden their racing focus (for the benefit of we fans) to chase more relay records, the HS 10k record and so forth. Who knows, maybe the could add a 6th and enter the famous Japanese college Ekiden relay race some day for the sheer hell of it.

Ryun ran 3:39.0 in ‘64, as a HS junior.
So? It’s Ryun! A 3:39.39 is still very impressive!
