Hello guys,
I ran my 2nd marathon last Sunday, aimed for sub3 but finished in 3:07. I was on pace for 2:58 for the first 20 miles, then my leg muscles were shot and I finished as I could.
I'm not too unhappy with this performance since I did 3:40 last year for my first, so still a good improvement. However, I did a 1:18 half one month ago, so I thought sub3 was definitely achievable (maybe even easily). So I'm trying to figure out whether 1) I had a bad day/fueling/pacing/whatever, 2) I obviously wasn't ready or 3) I suck at marathon.
My training in short:
- roughly 40mpw in average in the last 3 months, peaked at 51mpw 2 weeks out.
- 4 long runs > 16 miles in the last five weeks, with 20 miles for the longest
- 4 weeks out: 1:18 half (race effort, felt really strong) / 3 weeks out: 20 miles with 6 last at MP (felt terrible) / 2 weeks out: 17 miles with 9 last at MP (felt terrible) then taper
I realise this training might sound minimal for a marathon but I know some people who do way better half -> full conversions with much less training than that. Last year I ran 3:40 out of 1:29 half PR which was already terrible. So I would love a little feedback to learn and do better next time :)
