Before the Farah haters roll in I’d like to point out Farah was 4s faster over 1500. I would never bet against prime Farah dude knows how to win races.
This is a dumb question because part of what made Bekele great was that he would not let this situation happen. Bekele won the 2008 olympic 5k in 12:57 pushing the pace himself from 2k out. If Taoufik Makhloufi and Mo Farah are both fresh at the end of a tactical 5k, who wins? Its dumb because Taoufik Makhloufi wouldn't be fresh at the end of a 5k if Mo Farah was in it.
In their primes Farah because Bekele has made a massive tactical error by allowing him to hang around. Reality is with Bekele in the mid/late 2000s, he would have gapped Farah by the bell or else Farah would have spent all he had just to be with Bekele at the bell. Bekele wins either way.

Well, Bekele let it happen TWICE against el G. Just sayin’.

With video, I proved it wasn’t a dumb question and that Bekele indeed did let that situation happen and won in 13:17.
say both are fresh at the end of a tactical 5k, who takes it, both in their prime
Mo had a great kick but 2007-2009 Bekele could kick just as well if you actually look at his closes in those years. He outkicked a prime Lagat. People act like Mo had the best kick ever but prime Bekele could kick just as well as Mo and Geb closed out a 10k in 24 seconds for his last 200m in his prime.
Bekele and Geb were very capable of outkicking Mo in a tactical race in their heydays
I guess it maybe depends on whos in lane 1 and ahead at the moment they hit the bell.. I would say that both have incredible finishing speed, so whoever is forced to run the long way and go wide to pass will be at the disadvantage and would lose. Bekele is known for controlling races from a long way out, and mo farahs main strategy was getting to the front with 600-800 to go and forcing people to pass him wide in the bell lap, so it would defintely be an intense battle even before the bell lap.

This is a stupid comparison because Makhloufi is a 800/1500 guy, while both Farah and Bekele are 5000/10000 guys. Farah will almost always win. You guys act like Farah is so slow compared to Bekele but he’s not far behind, he just focused on titles instead of fast times. Prime Farah in a well paced race with good conditions can 100% run under 12:45/26:30. He destroyed the top guy over and over again without fail in two Olympic cycles. Pure dominance. If Bekele pushes the pace 2k out Farah can just sit on him and dust him on the final lap.

It's an interesting question. Both were great runners. Farah was a great tactician as well as an incredible finisher. If he takes the bell in front he is unbeatable from there. El G also showed that Bekele could be taken in the home straight by a runner with more speed. I would put my money on the 3.28 runner but it did take a 3.26 guy to take Bekele in 2004. We will never know.
