Granted he ran the anchor leg, but splitting 44-high is no joke. That's the kind of speed needed to be a medal threat at worlds. Exciting stuff ahead for his collegiate career.
He's nowhere near a medal threat at worlds right now. Who in their right mind would suggest that he is? Him splitting in the 44s is a sign that he has a key tool to get there eventually.
I watched his 800m. Very uninspiring, borderline DQ-worthy for lack of effort. It's clear he dogged it to save everything he had for the 4x400m. Him being "terrible" in the 800m today is pretty meaningless regarding what he's capable of.

Relay splits are sort of trash but how many elite 800m guys have sub 45 speed? Sure there are a couple but at a certain point you are almost too fast. You end up with guys like Mark Everett (i.e. a really, really good guy) who was probably the best in the world at 500-600m and then fall back to the 10-20 range. Maybe it is just coincidence (after all how many sub 45 guys ever try the 800m) but you might also be hitting time that requires a skill set that doesn't transfer as well. You end slightly off from the optimal speed/endurance balance.
Of course maybe he is they guy that goes nuts and resets the books by being a 1:39 guy. As always you just hope he gets bunch of healthy years so we can enjoy the ride...

He ran a superb relay leg but lets be honest, people were totally wrong to have him as a medal threat. Sumner ran a terrible race and prelim was indication of that. Outdoors he might rally back.
Really was over shadowed by Cade Flatt in HS now look at him now, Cade is in his shadow
Cade Flatt was in Will’s shadows at year will and will be forever. People have been salivating over Sumner’s long term prospects since he ran that 500m.

Its not that rare at all.
Brandon Miller split 44 high for TAMU last year made the WC team.
Emmnual Kemboi split 43r and ran 44 open and was world champ.
Jonathan Jones from Texas split 43.4 last year and ran 1:45.
Speaking or Mark Everett, Jose Parilla his 800m Olympic teammate was a sub 45 relay man.
These are just off for top of my head. But, Will is super slender kid. Built like a miler. You want to see him grow into the the distance. And that’s a lot to be said considering he ran 1:46 in HS.
Exciting would be he stays one or two years at the 400, gets down to a flying start ~44.0. With his build he might (might!) be able to get some insane 800 later on. Like American record level. He definitely has very good speed endurance. It just seems he is not strong enough yet for the 800, but he's young and has plenty of time, even for the 2024 Olympics.

Exactly you list a bunch of fast dudes who in general haven't come close to breaking 1:44. It is one thing to run a good 1:45.8. it is another to run a 143.7.
Well except Korir. He is a stud. Now miller is young so I expect endurance to improve. Not as sold on the much older Jones. He could end up in that not fast enough for a world class 400m guy and not strong enough for the 800m

Devon Dixon split 43.9 for TAMU, Emmanuel Korir split multiple 43's for Utep. 44's nice but not unheard of.
My question is: does the Georgia coach have any experience actually building an 800 runner? It doesn't look like it - he's regressed in the 800 considerably while doing very well at the 400-600. Sumner's choice of going to Georgia really puzzled me (why not A&M, UTEP, Texas, Penn St), maybe he's trying to focus more on the 400.

Close to home and his girlfriend is at Georgia as well.
Great runner. We know that based on his incredible 500m and 600m times. He's great in the 800m and at a young age. He has alot of potential that will emerge with experience.
Watched the 4x400 last night. UCLA did the best job I’ve ever seen keeping position to win. If you watch where in lane 1 they run when trying to be passed it’s impressive. Amazing team tactics
