Paul will be 33 later this year. Like Centro he knows the best is behind him. He will never medal again so he is taking stock.
I’m not discounting a 34 year old Paul Chelimo medaling in the 5k in Paris. That’s not that old for a 5k guy and even last year Paul ran a 7:39 3k after, by his own admission, taking too long of a break after the Olympics.
Let’s be honest too, in a 13:10 race, Paul Chelimo has a better chance of medaling if he’s in 12:57 shape than Grant, Joe, or Woody do even if they’re in 12:47-12:52 shape.
Woody will let the pressure get to him and fall off the pace then kick valiantly for 8th, Grant will hug the inside rail and make a late charge to pass someone for 4th or 5th, and Klecker just doesn’t have good enough closing speed to medal in an Olympic 5k/10k. Chelimo has never been the best at time trials but he’s the best championship 5k guy we’ve got and shines when the pressure is brightest.

You will be disappointed. Chelimo is finished as a medal threat. It is OK. By the way Chelimo has had a career somewhat similar to Centro’s and they are both finished.
I know he isn't everyone's cup of tea, but he's represented the country well. You can guarantee entertainment when he lines up.
I always think about his 10k 5k double at USA's a few years back: great race against Lomong- wildly fun to watch
One of the toughest competitors to ever put on a US singlet. Won't retire with flashy PRs, but the dude was in the mix in almost every championship he ran and will walk away with at least 3 medals. I almost had a stroke in 2016 when he nearly ran down Farah for Gold.
Paul Chelimo is what racing is about. Tough as nails, aggressive and is ready to go toe to toe with the best. Oh, he might have won an Olympic medal or two. Fearless and will punch you in the mouth. One of my favorites.

The workouts of his I’ve seen are some of the most impressive ever, and his attitude during them even more so. The guys a beast. Hopefully not retiring but if he is it’s been a killer career.
