You can buy sodium bicarbonate pill or powder for a fraction of the money. The result is marginal. And it will increase sodium intake significantly and add water weight to your body.
It's taking over the cycling world for sure

Do NOT listen to this guy, unless you want to $hit your pants halfway into your run. The Maurten system is different in both its delivery and absorptive properties. I tried it prior to a harder 10 mile tempo run (52:15), and didn’t really notice an appreciable difference.
I don’t know why you would want to ingest it, rather than have it absorbed directly onto the muscles. This has been used for years by cyclists with a product such as PR Gel. Yes, hokey name, but the stuff works. It is basically sodium bicarbonate in a concentrated gel that you rub onto your legs about 45 min before the activity, giving time for the gel to be absorbed through the skin. I’ve used it and think it’s worth the cost.

2019, I asked the company producing the PR lotion if it was used by pro runners after seeing that it was endorsed by the greatest doper of all time Lance Armstrong. Here is their response "Eliud Kipchoge. Zane Robertson. To name two of the top runners that use a ton of pr lotion in training in racing."
This information seems more relevant to me than ever haha
