Not at just the USA level but globally. Without the likes of Rudisha, Brazier, Amos, the event is just awful. Please give me some reasons to get excited for the 800.
Think we are seeing the impact (or lack of impact) from shoe tech in the 800. Longer events are getting large boosts in times with records going down seemingly every weekend. The 800 looks basically the same as it did in the 2010s. The insanity of the distance performances are making the 800, which doesn’t get the same shoe bump in racing and training (unless 800 guy is very aerobic based with higher mileage), look lame in comparison.

The distance events have looked more or less the same for 20+ years. Barriers like 3:30 and 12:50 still mean something and are only broken by the top few.
Look at the 3k and 10k if you want, it’s the same story. If the shoes were worth what many here claim, all the old records would have been obliterated and times that were previously elite would be commonplace. It’s not like 12:48 is the new 13:00. People are losing their minds over soft indoor records going down and letting it cloud their judgement.
I'm still hoping Max Burgin will revitalize the event from the front. He's still a few months shy of 21. But he hasn't posted anything on his Instagram account since last August, not long after announcing the deep vein thrombosis and being forced to withdraw from Eugene. I'm not sure what is going on.
Lol Brazier. If there ever was too much hype in the 800...got to its apex with that clown
Amos wasn't really great either. Very inconsistent
Yes what was I thinking. Brazier breaking a 30 year old american record was so lame
And Amos the only guy other than Rudisha to run a 1:41 in this millennium, total loser
Lol. Ooooo, yeah man. That 30 year old American record. So Brazier is on par with Tuka.
I dont see anyone here saying they are missing Tuka from the event. I just see a lot of lost, shattered Brazier fanboys who insisted their hero was the greatest things ever and was sure to break the world record and dominate for years. He...is...the...same....as...Tuka!!

Brazier is 9th all-time vs. 13th for Tuka. Brazier is a WORLD CHAMPION in the fastest time ever at the World Championships, while Tuka’s a silver medalist, finishing 1.13” behind in that same race.
Tuka is a great 800 runner with a great career, but Brazier’s peak was higher, and he’s American so naturally he garnered more talk on these boards. He’s also 25 years old vs. Tuka at 32, which is an old man in 800m terms.
A lot of casual fans and high school kids probably saw that Brazier was “only” 1.43 seconds off the WR at 22 years old and figured he had a great chance at getting there. Followers with a more nuanced understanding of the event from a historical and statistical standpoint would have known it was highly unlikely that he’d run sub-1:41, but couldn’t have ruled out his breaking into the 1:41 club after Doha 2019. In any case, calling Brazier an overhyped clown is a real clown comment. It’s too bad it seems foot injuries have derailed his career.

Nijel Amos? Good riddance to him as he failed a drug test and dodged one or more much earlier in his career. The sport is better without such cheats.

Maybe 800m demonstrates shoe tech improvement over the past 1/2 dozen years or so is a placebo. Shoe tech hasn't lead to any world records recently in 1500m either. Maybe Ugandans over the past 1/2 a dozen years are getting into racing 3000m to Marathon.

Agree, I have a lot more respect for Brazier than Amos. I hope he makes it back to his top form at some point over the rest of his career. Super fun guy to watch race and easy to root for.
The current US talent pool is just lacking. Nothing against the guys like Hoppel and Murphy out there still trying to make it happen, but USA couldnt even make the final in Eugene.
Say what you want about Amos but his front running, eyes bugging out style made races interesting.
Comments about standards such as 12:50 and 3:30 are true. I think the jumps seen by shoe tech are happening mostly to the masses that benefit the most from it.
You want to see 800 performance drops, start getting the 44/45 second 400 meter guys that aren't going to win anything to move up.

An American cynical perspective - since our guys aren't running well no one is? Amos is Sus anyway and Rudisha was one of a kind. Don't see the world 1500/mile records going down but lots of chatter about those events, Oh that's right a couple of Americans are doing better.
Korir has been doing fine, although not going after records, maybe now he will? He certainly has the 400m speed to do it. Absent indoors.
Marco Arop will be a star, still just learning the event - anyone who doubts his ability simply doesn't get it. Absent indoors as well. It is going to be a long year - Worlds in middle of August, Pre in September, heck even Pan Am's in October.
If the British kid (Max Burgin)can stay healthy long enough, he too could be good.
Although it seems as if most of you have already written off Flatt, hopeful of Sumner still.
Murphy is getting old for the 800m. Not sure Hoppel can make the jump to the elite on a consistent basis. Jewett and Miller have yet to show without a NCAA season to prep them. But there is always someone coming out of the woodwork from the NCAA, so who knows?
