Here we go the yearly SEC time of year where they crush their distance runners by throwing them into everything. 5k, DMR, the mile. Poor Lauren Gregory she’s run every event under the sun tripling all the time. Someone needs to say enough is enough and tell these abusive coaches to stop.

yes there is a pattern that AR uses their top athletes a lot at Conference meet. They did it to Gear and others I recall.
As athletes we love to do it. No greater joy than contributing to something greater than yourself and giving life for your teammates because you know they'd do the same. Always an honor. Sorry you feel like you can't handle it but some of us revel in the opportunity to :)

Wait a sec, you said the 5k, which she is not running.

Abusive? These kids are getting the equivalent of like a $75k a year to run for their schools. There are two meets that matter - conference and NCAAs.
SEC coaches are paid more on average and probably have higher bonuses in contract for SEC placing/title. It may be more worth it to get a high SEC rank than an otherwise 8th place an nationals if you had rested runners.

How many of them will ever run pro?
If you’re talking about the cream of the crop of the SEC, a good percentage of them actually do go pro.
Also, you say that conference & NCAA matter, while somewhat true, keep it in context. We’re talking about the indoor season here. Outdoor is a lot more important. Some view the indoor season as a “rust buster” of sorts and is primarily a way to begin preparation for the outdoor season, maybe try a new technique whether it be for running, throwing, jumping, or whatever. Too many, though, attach too much importance to the indoor season.

This is about the team title, not individual achievement. John McDonnell really emphasized this point. He won all those titles by doubling and tripling his athletes. Go to five42.org to see what they thought about it and him.
Its no different for the women. Arkansas is always about TEAM titles.
indoor is just as important. These coaches have bonus incentives for conference championships.
Most of these runners will never go pro or if they do they will not run "professionally" for more than a couple of years.
Seriously, I don't get the mentality of not running the athletes hard in college. You might as well get the most out of them as you could since they'll work 9-5 jobs after graduation.

Care to elaborate on what you mean by the bolded statement? Are you talking about the athletes on full-ride scholarship?
This isn’t that far off. Much depends on the tuition of the school and if they are out of state or not. Obviously room and board is a big ticket item. The amount of free workout gear adds a little. If you really want to tack on the cost of travel to away meets, that can get close to that total.
They are there to compete. WTF is the purpose of being a scholarship athlete if not to compete vs your peers?
I'm with you. The criticism of the US college system for having athletes double and even triple at meets began when college teams raced more than they do now. Most of those races were dual or tri meets, won lost records mattered and athletes competed in two or three events weekly. No one does that anymore unless it's at something like a conference meet where team scores are kept.
