As a former Athlete at Saint Leo University, this is absolutely pathetic. The athletes and coaches deserve more. For example, the Cross Country and Track Programs have some of the lowest operational costs. Also to note, it’s one of the most successful national qualifying teams for the university.
So to say it’s “too expensive,” or the program was dropped to “lack of merit” is an absolute lie. The Cross Country program was one of the most successful programs at the university itself.
The Cross Country program has hosted the NCAA DII National Championships TWICE. The team and individual runners have qualified for the NCAA DII National Championships every single year over the past 8 or more years. Not only to that, the Saint Leo Cross Country team had dominated in the Sunshine State Conference winning conference championships and producing individual conference champions.
During my four years at Saint Leo, I was able to compete at the NCAA DII Cross Country Championships three time and the team also won the SSC Conference Championships three times.
In Novemebr the athletic department did it's annual Lions Legacy, each sport asked for donations from former athletes and graduates of Saint Leo. That money was raised for the athletic department... Saint Leo mentioned that this past year they raised over $132,000.
Where did that money go? If people donated to a specific program and you’re cutting that program what are you doing with that money?
Beyond belief and absolutely a disgrace.
Due to the size of most programs and scholarship limitations, plus being DII…the amount of money coming into the school based off walk-ons, min-to-no and partial scholarships would blow you hair back.
You’re talking 100’s of thousands in tuition for on kids who just want to compete.
What other teams can bring that kind of money into the school just from attendance? Next to none.
Also, the university has dumped MILLIONS on a new Fitness that is a net loss of profit monthly. And, added Skeet Shoot and Acro & Gymnastics (and they don’t even compete at the NCAA level). Plus, they’ve also spent on Video Gaming teams.
PLUS, the Athletic Department raised $132,000 dollars? Where was that spent?
Seems to me, it’s just a misappropriation of money.
