It went largely unheralded behind Nuguse’s 7:28 (which was unquestionably the performance of the race), but Kessler running 7:39 was really, really impressive. Sadly it won’t count as the U20 American record, as he’s turning 20 this year, but he’s still 11th all-time for Americans indoors, and a full 10 seconds faster than any American 19yo has run, indoors or outdoors (Rupp’s outdoor 7:49 is the next closest). If he was a junior, he would be 7th all-time, ahead of Kejelcha. IAAF points tables give it 1207 points, equal to 3:32 in the outdoor 1500. This might be his best performance yet, and given how little Ron focused on indoors, I think we’re gonna see something very special from him this outdoor season.
