27’09 for the Ugandan with Katir in tow at 27’19. Although I have only seen small parts of the race, Cheptegei just didn’t look like his usual self. Even his stride/arm carriage appeared off. Best link I could find:

He did have to shut down his season from injury and missed the Great North Run in September, so could still be building post-injury.
And very impressive strength by Katir running 27:19 on the roads 5 months after a medal in the 1500m. Outside of Jakob, he has to be the aerobically strongest globally competitive 1,500m runner.
He's no Bekele.
Very strong run for Katie, he's going to be a threat again this year
Yeah, nice to be off-form and run 27:09 in the dark.
That’s true, but this race has nothing to do with it. In November 2008 Bekele finished a distant third in the 7 Hills 15k, but no one remembers that because it simply doesn’t matter.
Does anyone happen to remember that race, by the way? Bekele’s splits (14:12-13:45-15:45) are interesting; did he get cramps or something?
Katir is the most obvious doper
Lol I wish I could split 27:57 on an off day
Thank you for posting! That was great. I would love to see a weekly recap like this on a constant basis.
Unless the course has changed in the last 15 years, it’s point-to-point with a pretty significant net downhill, fwiw.
Let me tell you this! I don’t say this often about a runner but Katir is sketchy AF! One month ago, he had hard times keeping up with Thierry in 29:10 10km’s cross country! He was struggling doing 65-66 400’s ( yes it’s at altitude in Sierra Nevada) but to flip this in less than a month and running 27:10’s on the roads it’s very very impressive😉
That's a fine long jump for a distance runner. Is that a Ugandan national record?
Last year he won San Silvestre Vallecana with 27:45, that was sketchy too?
In the last 2 months he only run 3 cross country races and they were his first experiences with the specialty.
He looked off? Well I wouldn't expect an obvious doper to be fully doped year round!
This year we shall player poker with Katir.
He look elegant as profile.
Yep.
If you can bounce back from two 10km cross in 30min and one in 29:20 to 27:10’s on the road in one month, that progression is just crazy! I don’t care who you are! What is he going to be running in March?
Popping Katir probably the biggest AIU priority for 2023.
Just here to point out Ghost1 and Aussiestatman missing out on another truly great performance
While the course in the Spanish capital is not eligible for record purposes, Katir’s time was the second fastest in history on all courses by a European distance runner behind Julien Wanders’ continental standard bearer of 27:13 which was set in Valencia in 2020.
