One of the greats
One of the greats
Thank you for posting this, coahc.
One of the greats. I get goosebumps watching highlights from his 1960 run in Rome. RIP.
Super sad. Reading about Halberg's accomplishments against the odds was a huge inspiration for my earlier running when I was growing up in New Zealand. A lot of people probably don't know his full story but he suffered a really bad injury playing rugby when he was younger which made him switch to athletics. Consequently he always ran with a withered arm, which was noticeable but that didn't stop him winning gold in the 5000m at the Tokyo Olympics in 1960 along with multiple other titles and records. RIP
Great inspiration to me as a boy, amazing runner.
Yes, not as well known as Snell but pretty amazing career -- I believe he actually won his 5k Gold in Rome before Snell won his 800 gold. RIP.
It's called the Golden Hour by some Kiwis, the hour when Halberg and Snell won their races. RIP.
He was a hero both on and off the track. Dedicated his life after running to helping children with disabilities. We lost another good one.
And a few hours later Barry Magee ran to 3rd in the marathon. Bringing Lydiard to the world. 800, 5000, marathon medalist all with essentially the same training.
