I was injured for the latter half of my summer/ early fall and have just recently gotten into a good consistent groove over the last month or so. I have been reflecting on my training log and realized that I have never put down a REAL consistent base phase. I'm talking a 2-3 month healthy summer, good XC, and THEN get sharp for track season. I usually get injured somewhere in there due to my own recklessness and then come back and run something mediocre. I know how beneficial it is to have a solid foundation before hitting the speed (I am an 800/1500 guy) and I am much smarter in terms of planning and executing training than I was in the past.
My training has been going super smoothly but I am getting tempted into hopping into some of these fast indoor track races, treating them as a replacement for workout days and giving myself full recovery with as much easy mileage as necessary afterward. Would that be OK to do during the base phase or would it be better to do an uninterrupted 10-12 weeks of tempos, fartleks, hills, etc. ?
