Heard that the last time they didn’t make it was 1963. They are in a really tough section this year. 6 of their guys are new to varsity. They only finished 8th last year at state.

Coach Joe Newton has used the sport of Cross Country Running to teach simple but important lessons to high school boys for the last 50 years. "Always do your...
York is looking to be the first team out in their section. for them to have a chance to qualify, ALL of their Varsity guys have to be on (Hill/Bryk not finishing last on the team like last time)
Sandburg is in that section too. For them it’s also been long since they didn’t make state. They’re better than York, but for both teams to qualify, one of the teams better than these 2 has to blow it at sections.
I hear some talk that Benet Academy has a chance to be good this year and make state but I don’t think they will beat either of these teams at sections and go to state. This team is very young though. No seniors
Seeing the photographer dad and playing rap music in the background is just the most cringe scene ever. We need a more modern high school xc documentary.
Elmhurst is a fairly well off suburb itself, although it probably doesn't approach Newbury Park.
Elmhurst is ok but touches suburbs filled with poors. I'm not sure all the communities feed into York.
Anyway, York is old news. Times change. Like someone else said, that's a good thing.
Explain why this makes a difference. York was successful for over 50 years no matter what kids went to it. Not all of Elmhurst is affluent. Newton was just a great coach who took kids without a lot of talent, many of them from gym classes and turned them into excellent teams.

It’s called being able to recruit a hundred kids. Throw 80 mile weeks and killer workouts at them (which very few high schoolers are doing) and see what sticks. That’s what he was good at.

Oh and make sure they’re burned out in high school so they do nothing of equivalence at the collegiate or pro level.

You have no clue about what it takes to be a top level athlete either in college or professional. Most don't make it. Do some research at NCAA cross results history and you'll see 9:00 high schoolers buried in 120th place.

The man is quoted in saying that all he cared about was their high school glory. He didn’t care about their long term development. Don Sage for example had Olympic qualifying talent but what the heck happened to him?

Sage went to Worlds XC (ahead of Alan Webb) and was the #2 finisher on the US team in the senior race. Ten time All-American, NCAA 1500 champ (also beating Alan Webb) and you're asking what happened to him?
Maybe the question you should be asking is why US athletes crap out in the collegiate system. Don't you wonder why so many now leave college and turn pro? What happened to German Fernandez who was significantly faster than Sage? He even trained under Schumacher with BTC. Why aren't you asking that?

And you also missed my point how most York guys are not super talented. York has had 3 guys break 9:00 in 60 years. 9:12 gets you 12th on the all-time list. And you somehow think they should be providing Olympic and professional talent?
