A couple of people I know (who've never met afaik) who can both do a sub 20min 5k. Are both going up to half marathons and are both doing 1h34/36 ish times.
Whereas me, with my 23.40 5k am struggling to break 1h50 for a half. And my marathon time is so terrible I'm embarrassed! (over 4h!)
My 2 friends both set fast 5ks before looking longer. That was their sole focus for several months. They both joined run clubs which had dedicated track sessions.
So before my next marathon (date tbc, but likely next year now) Should I go back to basics, scrap all the longer 30k runs. And just go all out on a good 5k. Build my speed first, then work on endurance. Potentially join a club even?
Or can you actually keep the higher mileage per week (I'm probably at 40-50mpw) AND take great chunks out of a 5k run time through the accepted wisdom of intervals and tempo work?
Or is it just a coincidence that I'm only noticing due to Strava, and both ways are effective if given enough time and effort?
