I just graduated a few months ago. I’m looking to run my first marathon this October in hopefully a sub 2:40. 5k pr in college was 16:44. When I plug my 5k pr into those running equivalency calculators, it looks like it’s about equivalent to a 2:40. This might come across as rather dumb, but I have noticed that a lot of elite fields at big marathons require the last few people in to be around that time, so that is basically why it’s my goal.
I was running about 70 mpw in college. Now I’m running about 90-100 mpw (will have about 4 months of 90+ mile weeks before the race hopefully). Have done 3 20 mile long runs and plan to do 3 more before I taper. The 3 have been done at about a 6:30 average pace. I haven’t really done workouts as I’m nervous while doing more mileage than normal that it’ll result in an injury.
How difficult is a sub 2:40 marathon for a woman? Is it possible with enough training that anyone with a sub 17 min 5k can do it? I’m just wondering if it’s a realistic goal for my first one, and if it doesn’t go well, if it makes sense for me to keep pursing that time. I’m also just worried that I don’t grasp how difficult the marathon really is yet. Anyway, I appreciate any advice!
