They add a stipulation where the guy in the last place each lap gets eliminated until there is only like 7 guys left.
People don't want to watch dudes casually jog around for 10 minutes with 800m of actual running competitive(5000m)
people don't want to watch dudes casually jog around for 24 minutes for 800m of actual competitive running(10000m).
You wanna make the WHOLE race enjoyable to watch? Last guy gets eliminated every lap until there is like 8 people left, then. You gotta make the first 4200m or 9200m actually interesting to watch or the 5000m and 10000m will forever be the less popular running events.
Nobody cares about unknown East African villagers. They don't speak English and the IAAF can't promote / market them.
That is why they found and gave protected status to Mohammad Farah. They could market him as a British athlete or even a European athlete.
The difference?
In 2008 when Kenenisa Beke won the gold in the 5K/10K, Beijing Olympic stadium was 75% empty.
In 2012 when Mohammad Farah won the gold in the 5K/10K, London Olympic studium was 100% full and they are all standing, cheering and applauding for the duration of the races.
The marketing factor of the athlete makes all the different in the world.

I just had a look at those races out of curiosity and I think you may be remembering them a little bit different than they were
Also Farah was British racing in London, Bekele was Ethiopian racing in China. Not quite the same

This idiot went and replied to his own thread so he could bump it up.
I am an East African villager, and I want to tell you this: you are an idiot.
Wtf? I don't know anyone who follows the sprints. Why would anyone want to watch an event where a bunch of clowns are walking around in circles, posing, preening, puffing up for 10 minutes, take 10 minutes to set up in blocks, wait another 10 minutes for false starts then run 10-20 seconds? It's so boring

I was going to say- they won't be popular until there is an athlete winning/medaling who can appeal to Europe/America.
WA should take advantage of Jacob and Grant.
Jacob is the perfect love/hate athlete.
And it's not that an African can't be popular. The problem is they appear to be (as the NY Times put it many years ago) "fungible supermen". There are a lot of them and they seem to be interchangeable.
Kip Keino and Ben Jipcho were unique.
I do think that some of the stories of Kenyans bringing their prize money home and helping their whole village would appeal to people but we also need someone European and/or American and "cool".
Love him or hate him, you can't deny Jacob's cool factor.

You just describes the average play in football- except the action only lasts about 5 seconds.
Unfortunately the average American has an attention span of about 10 seconds for sports.
I am a former distance runner that still enjoys watching distance races but ya'll need to get over yourselves. Just because the races you enjoy aren't the "most popular" doesn't mean anything needs to change. Accept the fact that most people would rather watch a 10-20 second sprint and stop trying to make a sprint vs distance debate.
Let the distance stuff be ran in East Africa and the sprints in Caribbean countries and stadiums will be fully packed! You like your baseball, we like our distance end of story! Not our fault if you can’t learn to pronounce somebody’s name properly! We know who Jacob Ingebrigsten is, even Charles Philibert Thiboutot why is it so hard for you say Tegefa or Kirui, Kamworor…

Ironic since you butchered both of their names lol.

This is just blatantly false lol and easily provable. The stadium for the 5,000 is totally packed.
There has to be a white guy in medal contention in the last 100 meters for those races to be popular in America. So implement a rule, that if the first placed white guy is struggling to stay with the lead runner, he should be helped. For example give him an electric scooter to ride until he reaches the lead again.

Weird post. As if you didn't watch the 5000 or 10000 in 20 years and don't know that Fisher does exactly that - medal contention. Or do you hate whites so much that you block them out? Was the 5000 winner this year a pacific islander?

The stadium in London was full for the whole duration including morning sessions with heats. It was sold out way in advance
